J.B. Wells Named IWU Football Assistant

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- J.B. Wells has been named as the new assistant football coach and recruiting coordinator at Illinois Wesleyan University, IWU head football coach Norm Eash announced today.

Wells, who will serve as Eash's offensive coordinator, replaces Chris Rorke, who left IWU to become head coach at Plymouth State in New Hampshire.

Wells worked for the past year at his alma mater, Trinity College in Hartford, Conn., serving as the offensive line coach and strength and conditioning coach. He was primarily responsible for all running game and pass protection schemes and recruited in Connecticut, Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, and the Midwest.

Wells was also a graduate assistant coach at Trinity from 1992 to 1994, supervising the offensive line.

From 1996 to 1998, Wells was an assistant football and track coach at the University of Chicago. He was the Maroons' running backs coach for the 1996 season and coached the quarterbacks and receivers in 1997.

Prior to his stint at Chicago, Wells was the offensive line coach and the strength and conditioning coach at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine, from 1994 to 1996.

Wells coached varsity tight ends and freshman running backs and wide receivers at Brown University in 1991-92, where he was also assistant recruiting coordinator.

A 1991 Trinity graduate with a bachelor's degree in history, Wells was a four-year letterman in football and a three-year starter at offensive guard and center for teams that finished with a 24-7-1 record. He was also all-conference in indoor and outdoor track in the shot and discus in 1989 and 1991. Wells was only the 38th recipient of the Trinity Blanket Award, presented to athletes who earned nine or more letters in three sports at the school.

Wells, who is married (Lisa) with one daughter (Caitlyn), also coached the Carrickfergus Knights in Belfast, Northern Ireland, to the Shamrock Bowl championship in the summer of 1998.
