March 2
Illinois Wesleyan senior Brooke Bailey was chosen to the second team of the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin all-star squads in voting by league coaches on Tues., March 2. Bailey was third in the CCIW in scoring, fifth in rebounds, ninth in field goal percentage and led the conference in 3-point field goal accuracy (.400, 22 of 55). She connected on 1.67 3-pointers and blocked .79 shots per game, both sixth among league players.

Feb. 24
The Illinois Wesleyan women’s basketball team’s season ended with a 60-53 loss at North Park on Tues., Feb. 24. The Titans led at halftime, 34-26, but managed only four second half baskets (on 21 per cent shooting) as their season finished with a 12-13 overall record (7-7 in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin). Senior Brooke Bailey finished with 14 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Titans, while junior Hannah Meharry added 11 points and senior Jessie Freiburg had 10 rebounds. IWU outrebounded North Park, 40-33, and the Titans made 25-of-31 free throws (.806).

Feb. 21
The Illinois Wesleyan women’s basketball team kept its hopes for an appearance in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin tournament with a 64-59 win over Augustana on Sat., Feb. 21, at the Shirk Center. Brooke Bailey led the “Seniors’ Day” charge with 19 points, while fellow seniors Claire Deveaux had 13 points and Jesse Freiburg had 11 rebounds. The Titans improved to 12-12 overall and 7-6 in the CCIW while Augustana fell to 15-9, 6-8 CCIW.

Feb. 18
Senior Claire Deveaux came off the bench to score 18 points and lead the Illinois Wesleyan women’s basketball team to a 72-67 win at North Central on Wed., Feb. 18. The win improved the Titans to 11-12 overall and 6-6 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin, keeping alive IWU’s hopes of reaching the CCIW postseason tourney. Hannah Meharry scored 16 for IWU and made eight-of-10 free throw tries. The Titans led, 33-24, at halftime and by as many as 18 in the second half. Deveaux connected on seven-of-13 field goals and made four-of-eight 3-pointers.

Feb. 16
The Illinois Wesleyan women's basketball team dropped a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin decision, 57-41, to Millikin on Sat., Feb 14, at the Shirk Center. Senior Brooke Bailey (Byron HS) scored 11 points and had six rebounds while senior Jessie Freiburg (Quincy, Notre Dame HS) scored eight points and sophomore Katie Blonn (Des Plaines, Maine West HS) came off the bench to add seven points and six rebounds. The Titans’ record fell to 10-12 overall and 5-6 in CCIW play.
Earlier in the week (Feb. 10), the Titans pulled of a stunning road upset of Wheaton, topping the Thunder, 63-59 and snapping Wheaton’s eight-game winning streak. The Titans never trailed in this game, getting out to a 9-0 lead and leading by as many as 16 in the first half.
Bailey led the Titans with 24 points on 10-15 shooting from the field and a 3-5 effort behind the three-point line. Heidi Harnisch (Urbana HS) scored 13 points with nine rebounds, including six offensive caroms. IWU outrebounded Wheaton 52-27, including a 20-8 advantage on the offensive glass.

Feb. 6
Despite rallying from as many as 12 points behind early in the second half, the Illinois Wesleyan women’s basketball team fell short, losing to Carthage, 55-52, on Sat., Feb. 6 at the Shirk Center. The Titans fall to 9-11 overall and 4-5 in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play while Carthage improved to 11-9, 5-5 CCIW. IWU got 13 points and a game-high nine rebounds from senior Jessie Freiburg while sophomore Katie Blonn came off the bench to add 12 points. Brooke Bailey also grabbed eight rebounds for IWU, who outrebounded the Lady Reds, 44-33.

Feb. 3
The Illinois Wesleyan women’s basketball team exploded for 44 second-half points to win a road game at Elmhurst, 68-50, on Tues., Feb. 3. The Titans, winners of two in a row, improved to 9-10 overall and 4-4 in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin as they rallied from a 29-24 halftime deficit. Sophomore Katie Blonn came off the bench to score 11 points and snare five rebounds, while sophomore Heidi Harnisch scored 12 in a reserve role. Senior Jessie Freiburg added 11 points and had a team-high seven rebounds vs. the Bluejays (6-14 overall, 0-10 CCIW).

Jan. 31
The Illinois Wesleyan women’s basketball team snapped a two-game losing streak with a 43-33 win over North Central on Sat., Jan. 31 at the Shirk Center. The Titans improved to 8-10 overall and 3-4 in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin while North Central fell to 10-9, 4-4 CCIW. Claire Deveaux came off the bench to score eight points; Brooke Bailey, Val Fleishman and Heidi Harnisch also each scored eight and Bailey grabbed eight rebounds. Both teams struggled from the field as IWU shot 26 per cent and North Central shot 23 per cent and didn’t score for the first 7:12 of the game.

Jan. 24
The Illinois Wesleyan women’s basketball team lost it second league game in a row, falling at the Shirk Center to Wheaton, 77-70, in overtime on Sat., Jan. 24. The Titans, 7-10 overall and 2-4 in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin, were down 66-59 with 2:17 to play and scored the final seven points in regulation to tie the game 66-66 and force the overtime. Val Fleishman (shown) led IWU with 14 points and six rebounds, while Hannah Meharry added 13 and Jessie Freiburg scored 10 and also snared six boards. Wheaton is 13-4 overall and 5-1 in the CCIW.

Jan. 20
Illinois Wesleyan sophomore Val Fleishman was the lone Titan to score in double figures as IWU dropped a 68-53 decision to Millikin in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play on Tues., Jan. 20 in Decatur. The Titans fell to 7-9 overall and 2-3 in the CCIW as they managed just 39 per cent shooting from the field and connected on three of 21 3-point tries. Millikin improved to 14-2 overall, 6-0 in the league. Fleishman came off the bench to snare six rebounds as Brooke Bailey was held to six points.

Jan. 17
The Illinois Wesleyan women’s basketball team snapped a three-game losing streak with a 68-55 win over North Park on Sat., Jan. 17 at the Shirk Center. The Titans improved to 7-8 overall and 2-2 in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin as they were paced by 14 points from Jessie Freiburg (shown) and 13 points and 13 rebounds from Brooke Bailey. The Titans led went on a 14-2 run to close the first half and led at intermission, 33-20. Heidi Harnisch also scored 11 for IWU.

Jan. 10
Senior Brooke Bailey was the only Illinois Wesleyan player to score in double figures as the Titans lost a 59-53 decision to Carthage on Sat., Jan. 10, in Kenosha, Wis. IWU fell to 6-8 overall and 1-2 in College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin play as Carthage improved to 6-6, 1-2 CCIW. Bailey also collected a game-high nine rebounds and was six-for-seven from the field. Val Fleishman came off the bench to score nine and Jessie Freibrug got seven rebounds as IWU held a 38-31 rebound edge.

Jan. 7
Senior Brooke Bailey scored 24 points with eight rebounds and sophomore Amanda Glerum scored 20, but it wasn’t enough to prevent the Illinois Wesleyan women’s basketball team from losing to Augustana, 79-72, in Rock Island on Wed., Jan. 7. The Titans fell to 6-7 overall and are 1-1 in College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin play while the Vikings are 10-3, 1-2 CCIW. IWU trailed 46-39 at halftime and by as many as 14 in the second half before coming within five points on a late rally.

Dec. 30
The Illinois Wesleyan women’s basketball team saw its two-game winning streak snapped in an 80-67 nonconference loss at Franklin (Ind.) on Tues., Dec. 30. Seniors Jessie Freiburg and Brooke Bailey each scored 14 to lead the Titans, now 6-6 this season, while Val Fleishman came off the bench to score 11 and Amanda Glerum netted 10. The Titans trailed, 41-31, at halftime.

Dec. 21
The Illinois Wesleyan women’s basketball team has won two in a row for the first time this season after an 82-68 victory over Notre Dame de Namur in Belmont, Calif., on Sun., Dec. 21. The Titans, now 6-5 this season, got all five starters in double figure scoring, led by Claire Deveaux with 15 points. Amanda Glerum and Jessie Freiburg each scored 12 while Cassie Twaddle and Brooke Bailey each tallied 11. Twaddle got nine rebounds and Bailey grabbed seven as IWU held a 31-21 edge on the boards.

Dec. 19
The Illinois Wesleyan women’s basketball team downed the University of California-Santa Cruz, 70-51, on Fri., Dec. 19 in Santa Cruz, Calif. The Titans (5-5) led 33-31 at halftime and outscored the Banana Slugs, 37-20, in the second half to seal the victory. Senior Brooke Bailey scored 18 points while senior Jessie Freiburg added 13 and sophomore Amanda Glerum had 11. Illinois Wesleyan ends its West Coast swing by playing Notre Dame de Namur on Sun., Dec. 21, in Belmont, Calif.

Dec. 16
The Illinois Wesleyan women’s basketball team managed only 38 per cent shooting from the field as it dropped a 77-68 nonconference decision to Webster in St. Louis on Tues., Dec. 16. The Titans, who fell to 4-5 this season, got 15 points and six rebounds from Cassie Twaddle and Amanda Glerum added 13 points. Brooke Bailey and Val Fleishman each snared seven rebounds to pace IWU, who trailed 36-25 at intermission and by as many as 17 in the second half. Webster’s Angie Carr scored 33 points with nine boards.

Dec. 13
Brooke Bailey scored 24 points and grabbed seven rebounds and Val Fleishman had 19 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Illinois Wesleyan women’s basketball team to a 72-62 win over Elmhurst on Sat., Dec. 13 at the Shirk Center. The Titans improved to 4-4 overall in winning their opening College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin game while the Bluejays fell to 1-5 (0-1 CCIW). The Titans, ahead 31-25 at the half, shot 51 per cent for the game (26 of 51) from the field as Bailey was 8-of-11 and Fleishman was 8-of-12.

Dec. 9
The Illinois Wesleyan women’s basketball team managed only 31 per cent shooting from the field in the game as they lost a 55-50 decision on the road to Eureka on Tues., Dec. 9. Sophomore Val Fleishman came off the bench to lead IWU with 10 points while Cassie Twaddle added nine points and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds. Jessie Freiburg also scored nine points as IWU fell to 3-4 this season. IWU opens conference play Sat., Dec. 13 with a 5 p.m. home game against Elmhurst.

Dec. 4
The Illinois Wesleyan women’s basketball team managed only 39 per cent shooting (24 of 61) in the game as the Titans lost, 74-68, at Fontbonne in St. Louis on Dec. 4. Senior Brooke Bailey scored 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds, while Amanda Glerum scored 15 and Cassie Twaddle added 13. The Titans trailed by a 40-33 count at halftime and battled back to take a 48-47 lead with 11:05 to play in the game. But a 7-1 run by Fontbonne left IWU trailing, 54-49 with 8:50 to play as the Titans fell to 3-3 for the season.

Dec. 2
Illinois Wesleyan’s Amanda Glerum hit six 3-pointers, tying an IWU single-game record, as the Titans cruised to a 78-43 nonconference win over Aurora on Tues., Dec. 2 at the Shirk Center. Glerum finished with a game-high 22 points and tied the mark set twice last year by Katie Cantrell and in 1998 by Melissa Glerum (Amanda’s sister). Claire Deveaux came off the bench to score 15 points and Brooke Bailey grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.

Nov. 30
The Illinois Wesleyan women’s basketball team got five players in double figure scoring, but lost to the U. of Chicago, 83-77, on Sun., Nov. 30 at IWU’s Shirk Center. The Titans (2-2) were led by Hannah Meharry with 20 points, while Brooke Bailey (16), Val Fleishman (14), Amanda Glerum (10), and Claire Deveaux (10) all fueled the offense. Cassie Twaddle (pictured) led IWU with five rebounds. IWU managed just 44.1 per cent shooting from the field for the game (30 of 68) while Chicago (3-1) shot 63.3 per cent (31 of 49).

Nov. 26
The Illinois Wesleyan women’s basketball team rallied from a four-point halftime deficit to post an 85-73 win at Lake Forest on Wed., Nov. 26. The Titans improved to 2-1 as they outscored the Foresters, 47-31, in the second half and took advantage of 24 Lake Forest turnovers in the game. Senior Brooke Bailey scored a game-high 22 points, while sophomore Amanda Glerum scored 19 and junior Hannah Meharry added 18. Cassie Twaddle and Jessie Freiburg eacgh had six rebounds to pace IWU, which shot 58 per cent (29 of 50) from the field.

Nov. 22
Sophomore Val Fleishman scored 14 points and snared a team-high six rebounds as Illinois Wesleyan lost to Washington U., 81-65, in the championship game of the IWU Tip-Off Tournament on Sat., Nov. 22. The Titans (1-1) got a team-high 17 points from Brooke Bailey and 12 from Amanda Glerum in the loss. Washington U. (2-0) led 50-35 at halftime and were paced by Lesley Hawley’s 22 points.

Nov. 21
Brooke Bailey scored 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds to pace the Illinois Wesleyan women’s basketball team to a 71-53 season-opening win over Illinois College on Fri., Nov. 21. Cassie Twaddle scored 12 and Amanda Glerum added 10 for the Titans, who will play Washington U. for the tourney title at 4 p.m. Sat., Nov. 22 at the Shirk Center. Washington U. defeated DePauw, 69-56.

Nov. 21
The Illinois Wesleyan women’s basketball team, coached by Mia Smith, begins its 2003-04 season with a 7 p.m. game against Illinois College on Fri., Nov. 21, in the first round of the IWU Tip-Off Tournament at the Shirk Center. Washington U. and DePauw play the 5 p.m. game Friday; the consolation game will be at 2 p.m. Sat., Nov. 22, followed by the championship. Washington U. (26), DePauw (22), and IWU (20) all had 20 or more wins in 2002-03.

Oct. 24
The Illinois Wesleyan women’s basketball team was picked to finish fourth while the Illinois Wesleyan men’s team was tabbed for fifth in the preseason College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin coaches’ polls, released Fri., Oct. 24. Both IWU teams were conference champions and advanced to the NCAA Division III tournaments in 2003. The women’s team returns three starters, including Brooke Bailey, while the lone starter returning for the men’s team is Adam Dauksas.
