Illinois Wesleyan Loses to College of Wooster in NCAA Sectionals WOOSTER,Ohio (March 12, 2004) -- Illiinois Wesleyan's trip to the NCAA Tournament came to an end at The College of Wooster Friday night when the Titans dropped a 58-53 decision to the Fighting Scots in the Round of 16 at Timken Gymnasium. The Titans ended their season at 21-7. Wooster now plays John Carroll University Saturday night for the right to advance to the Division III Final Four in Salem, Va. The Titans led most of the first half, mounting as much as an 11-point lead, 22-11, with 4:31 left in the half. The Scots cut the lead to 24-18 at halftime. In the second half, Wooster unloaded a barrage of three-point shots to take control of the game in the final six minutes. Wooster had shot only 26 percent from the field against Illinois Wesleyan's zone defense in the first half. But senior Rodney Mitchell led a three-point assault which saw the Scots make seven of 15 three-pointers in the final 20 minutes. Mitchell finished the night with 19 points to lead Wooster while Kyle Witucky added 13 and Tom Port had 11 for the Scots, now 26-3 on the year. Illinois Wesleyan was led in scoring by Cory Jones, who had 15 points. Keelan Amelianovich added 12 points while Adam Dauksas had 11. Zach Freeman led the Titans in rebounding with 12 as the Titans held a 42-33 advantage on the board. IWU shots only 33 percent for the game. NCAA Sectional at The College of Wooster (Ohio)

Men's Basketball: Amelianovich, Trost Earn CCIW Top Honors Illinois Wesleyan sophomore Keelan Amelianovich (shown) has been selected as the Player of the Year in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin and, for the second straight season, Scott Trost has been chosen as the leagues Coach of the Year. Sophomore Adam Dauksas was selected to the second team and freshman Zach Freeman earned third team all-CCIW honors. Amelianovich is the first Titan sophomore since Jack Sikma (1975) to earn the honor and the first IWU player since Korey Coon in 2000. IWU won the league title for the second straight season and for the 26th time since 1946. Amelianovich Earns CCIW Honor for Second Straight Week For the second straight week, Illinois Wesleyan sophomore Keelan Amelianovich has been selected as the "Player of the Week" in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin on March 1. Amelianovich scored a career-high 26 points in a 97-71 win over North Central, then scored 17 with eight rebounds as the Titans won the CCIW title outright against Wheaton, 75-72, on Feb. 28. IWU (19-6) hosts Maryville (Mo.) [15-10] on Thurs., March 4, at 7 p.m. in the first round of the NCAA Division III tournament. |
