BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- Illinois Wesleyan University senior Kevin Fahey
has been selected to the first team defensive backfield of the Division
III football All-America teams chosen by Hewlett-Packard voters and by
Don Hansen’s Football Gazette.
Fahey (Oak Forest, Sandburg HS), who was IWU’s “Most Valuable
Defensive Player” this fall, was named to the first team of the all-College
Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin squads as a junior and senior and
was a first team all-North region selection this fall. He made nine interceptions
to set a school single-season record and his career total of 16 interceptions
is tied for the most in IWU football history with teammate Jon Goldie.
Fahey also made 43 tackles, including 32 solo, and broke up a team-best
15 passes with two fumble recoveries.
The 5-foot-10, 190 pound Fahey is the 10th IWU football player
to earn first team All-America status. Offensive tackle Tony Blazine was
an Associated Press “Little All-America” in 1934 and offensive tackle Ceasar
Douglas was an AP College Division All-American in 1974.
Running back Kurt Swearingen was named to the first team of the
1977 NAIA squad and defensive tackle Dick Geddes was a first team NAIA
selection in 1976. Linebacker Jim Kreitz and defensive back Al Mota were
first team NAIA selections in 1965 and 1964, respectively.
Wide receiver Chris Bisaillon was on the first team of the 1991
and 1992 Champion U.S.A. squads, and offensive lineman Adam Slotkus and
linebacker John Munch were both on the 1996 Hewlett-Packard team, while
Munch was on the Hewlett-Packard team and the Football Gazette squad in
1997.
A total of 104 players from 64 schools were named to the 1998
Hewlett-Packard Division III All-American team. The 21st annual Hewlett-Packard
team was selected by a panel of 30 sports information directors, representing
the four playoff regions in NCAA Division III Football.
The ballot included 356 players representing 135 of the 217 NCAA
Division III (non-scholarship) football-playing institutions. Teams with
two or fewer losses were allowed five nominations, teams .500 or better
could nominate up to three players, while schools finishing below .500
were allotted two nominations.
A total of 97 players from 64 schools were named to the Football Gazette Division III team. Seven players earned individual honors and Bob Nielson of Wisconsin-Eau Claire was chosen as the “Coach of the Year.”
