BLOOMINGTON, Ill.-- Senior Kevin
Fahey and junior Zac Williams have been selected as the most valuable defensive
player and most valuable offensive player, respectively, for the 1998 Illinois
Wesleyan University football team.
Fahey (Oak Forest, Sandburg
HS) was named to the first team of the all-College Conference of Illinois
and Wisconsin squads as a junior and senior and was a first team all-North
region selection this fall. He made nine interceptions to set a school
single-season record and his career total of 16 interceptions is tied for
the most in IWU football history with teammate Jon Goldie. Fahey also made
43 tackles, including 32 solo, and broke up a team-best 15 passes with
two fumble recoveries.
Williams (Pekin HS), who was
also first team all-CCIW and second team all-region, made 68 catches for
859 yards and 15 touchdowns, which is second best in a season at IWU. The
CCIW leader in receiving yardage, Williams now ranks 12th at IWU in career
receptions with 77 and is 14th with 1,007 career receiving yards.
Williams was also chosen as
a captain for the 1999 team, along with junior linebacker Adam Toelkes
(Streamwood, Schaumburg HS), junior offensive lineman DeAndre Hardy (Chicago,
Whitney Young HS), and junior fullback Dominic DeGustino (Chicago, St.
Patrick HS).
In other team honors, senior
linebacker Jed Shasteen (Sullivan HS) was named as the Most Improved Player
and sophomore defensive lineman Shawn Schadle (Crystal Lake, Marian Catholic
HS) was named as the Best Lineman.
Shasteen, a second team all-CCIW
selection, was second on the team with 70 total tackles and made 22 solos.
He led the Titans with nine tackles for yardage loss, including two quarterback
sacks.
Schadle, also a second team
all-CCIW selection, led all defensive linemen in tackles and was third
overall with 60, including 16 solo. He recovered two enemy fumbles and
had five tackles for yardage loss, including two quarterback sacks.
Sophomore running back Max
Milinkovich (Elmhurst, York HS) was tabbed as the teams Best Back and
senior Dan Condon (Ransom, Ottawa Marquette HS) was the top special teams
player.
Milinkovich was a first team
all-conference choice as he was the first Titan since Kurt Swearingen in
1977 to lead the leagues rushing statistics. For the season, Milinkovich
ran for 903 yards on 185 carries and scored six touchdowns. He also caught
27 passes for 324 yards and one score. In his two-year career, Milinkovich
already ranks 17th in IWU history with 1,142 rushing yards.
Condon had five solo tackles
and assisted on one more as a special teams player. As a running back he
gained 171 yards on 27 carries and scored two TDs and he also made one
two-yard reception for a touchdown.
Freshman running back Aaron
Telford (Bloomington, Central Catholic HS) was the squads Most Valuable
Freshman. He rushed for 254 yards on 34 carries, including a team-best
62-yard run against Augustana. He also returned 13 kickoffs for 233 yards,
a 17.9 average.
Senior Nat Zunkel (Elmhurst,
York HS) earned the annual Titan Award, given to the player who best
exemplifies team spirit, loyalty, sportsmanship, leadership, good attitude,
and citizenship. Zunkel started at different times as both a center and
a guard for an offensive line that enabled the Titans to gain 458 yards
and score 36.6 points per game.
Freshman fullback Sam Berner
(Pana HS) was chosen as the best offensive scout team player, while freshman
defensive end Chris Ries (Lockport HS) was named as best defensive scout
team player.
Scout teams imitate the approaching
opponent in practice each week.
IWU head coach Norm Eash awarded
letters to 52 IWU football players, 34 of whom will return in 1999. They
are:
