Brooks, Gallagher Top Players for IWU Women's Soccer

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- Freshman Julie Brooks and senior Erin Gallagher have been chosen as the most valuable players on offense and defense, respectively, for the Illinois Wesleyan University women’s soccer team.
Brooks (Belleville, West HS), who played both forward and midfielder this fall, led the Titans in scoring with 33 points and tied the school’s single season record for goals scored with 16. Chosen to the first team of the all-College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin squad, Brooks was also the CCIW “Player of the Week” once this fall. She had four multiple-goal games and scored three goals in games against MacMurray and Blackburn.
“Julie was fantastic and had a great season for a freshman,” said IWU head coach Tony Bankston, whose team finished 10-6-1. “She played hurt the last part of the season or would have been even more potent offensively. She can only get better as he college career continues.”
Gallagher (Springfield, Southeast HS), a three-year all-CCIW sweeper and IWU’s most valuable player on defense in 1996 and 1997, anchored a defense that allowed just 1.65 goals per game. She also contributed five assists.
“To be voted by her teammates as defensive MVP three straight seasons indicates the importance she has for our team,” Bankston said. “She’s the most aggressive player I’ve coached here and there were many times she, as a defender, allowed us to stay in and win close games.”
Junior Kel Erion (Algonquin, Jacobs HS) was the winner of the team’s “Outstanding Leadership Award” and was elected to serve a second season as a team captain. Erion will be joined as captain next season by sophomore Eleanor Flanagin (Downers Grove, North HS) and junior goalkeeper Gayle Woodbury (Little Canada, Minn., Roseville HS).
Woodbury had four shutouts and a goals-against average of 1.65 in 17 games this fall. In her career, she has allowed 1.46 goals per game and has recorded 14 shutouts in 41 games.
Two other freshmen provided offensive punch for the Titans. L.J. Hachmeister (Elmhurst, York HS) scored seven goals and added six assists while Jamie Vilos (Lockport HS) had six goals and assisted on two more.
Bankston awarded letters to 19 players, including eight freshmen and five sophomores. They are, with hometowns and high schools:
