According to the book, Our College Colors by Henry L. Snyder, the college colors at Illinois Wesleyan in 1887 were navy blue and light gray, then changed in 1892 to purple and a steel color.

| The 1929-30 basketball season was the first time the nickname "Titans" was pinned on the Illinois Wesleyan athletic teams. At one time or another, such names as "Gaws," "Green Dragons," and "Boy Beauties" were used, but none of those endured.
