BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- Korey Coon, Sara Seebruch, and Maggie Lamb of Illinois
Wesleyan University have been elected to the District Five College Division
all-academic men’s and women's basketball teams and will join representatives
of seven other districts on the GTE Academic All-America national ballots.
The all-district teams were chosen by a vote of members of the
College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) in Illinois, Indiana,
Minnesota, Wisconsin, and the Canadian provinces of Manitoba and Ontario.
To be considered for the GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-America squads, players
must be of at least sophomore standing, have a cumulative grade-point average
of 3.2 (of 4.0), and be a starter or first-line reserve.
Coon, a junior guard from East Peoria (HS), was a second team
GTE® Academic All-American as a sophomore. He has a 4.0 grade-point
average as a risk management and history major. A member of the IWU Economics
Society, he is the author of "Macroeconomic Effect of the GM Strike" paper
for economics journal.
One of 10 finalists for the Jostens Trophy honoring the top Division
III player, Coon is a volunteer for Big Brothers/Big Sisters, was a Relay
for Life Walk participant, and Kiwanis Club guest speaker. On campus, he
is a member of the Titan Law Club, treasurer of the Risk Management and
Finance Society, and president of the Phi Eta Sigma scholastic honorary.
Coon has moved up to No. 21 in career scoring at IWU with 1,221
points and going into the final week of the regular season, Coon led the
College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin in scoring, free throw percentage,
and 3-point field goal percentage.
Coon has made 286 free throws, good for No. 10 in IWU history,
and his .885 free throw percentage (286 of 323) is a school career record.
He is also in a second-place tie with 179 career 3-point field goals. His
122 free throws this year is the ninth best in a single season and his
73 3-pointers is second.
He was a first team all-CCIW selection, first team all-Midwest
Region, and honorable mention All-American as a sophomore when he finished
second in nation in 3-point FG percentage and ninth in nation in free throw
percentage.
He is the son of Larry and Nancy Coon, 601 Oakwood Rd., East
Peoria.
Others chosen to the first team and advancing to the national
Academic All-America ballot are junior forward Lance Meincke of Winona
State, 3.95, marketing; senior guard Andy Strommen of Chicago, 3.59, economics;
senior forward Bret Van Dyken of Ripon, 3.9, chemistry/biology; and senior
forward Joshua Wilhelm of Carleton, 3.43, biology.
Elected to the second team were guard Mike Heun of St. Norbert,
3.57, elementary education; center Craig Kelleher of Chicago, 3.69, public
policy; guard Scott Leibfried of MacMurray, 4.0, mathematics; forward Dan
Rohlfing of North Central, 4.0, computer science/business; and forward
Jim Slaid of Illinois College, 3.926, history/political science. All are
seniors except Rohlfing, who is a sophomore.
Seebruch, a senior forward from Tinley Park (Andrew HS), has a
3.59 grade-point average as a mathematics major and secondary education
minor.
This season she led the Titans in scoring and rebounding with
averages of 17.1 points and 8.8 rebounds. She also led IWU with an 84.8
percent free throw mark and set a school record with a 54.8 field goal
percentage (170 of 310).
She finished her career as IWU's fourth all-time leading scorer
(1,288 points) and seventh top rebounder (611) and was fourth in field
goals made (557) and eighth in free throws made (171).
She was IWU's "Most Valuable Player" and was second team all-conference
1998 after being third team all-CCIW in 1997. A two-year team co-captain,
she was selected as the team's "Most Improved Player" in 1996.
On campus, she is the secretary for IWU Math Society and a member
of the Alpha Lambda Delta scholastic honorary, the student athletic advisory
committee, and the Student Education Association. She has been a photographer
for campus newspaper, has served as a tutor for special education classes,
and completed a student teaching assignment during the fall 1998 semester.
She is the daughter of Dave and Judy Seebruch, 16447 Cherry Hill
Ave., Tinley Park.
Lamb, a senior guard from Geneseo (J.D. Darnall HS), is a biology
major with a 3.80 GPA.
This year she was second on the team with a 14.8 scoring average
and had a team-best 3.3 assists per game. She finished her career
as IWU's eighth all-time leading scorer (1,013 points), fifth in assists
(276), third in 3-point field goals (103), fourth in free throws (266)
and 10th in field goals (322).
Lamb was named IWU's "Best Defensive Player" in 1998 and in 1996
and was elected second team all-CCIW in 1998. She was named to the Whittier
College all-tourney team and won the CCIW All-Academic award for
winter sports as a junior.
Academically, Lamb has done a research fellowship at Illinois
State University, sponsored by National Science Foundation. She is a member
of Alpha Lambda Delta scholastic honorary; Beta Beta Beta biology honorary;
and Egas senior women’s honorary. She was an IWU Homecoming Committee member
in 1996 and 1997.
Lamb has also been a volunteer for "Make a Difference Day" and
Planned Parenthood and has been a physical therapy volunteer at local hospital.
She is the daughter of Charles and Beverly Lamb, 332 N. Russell
Ave., Geneseo.
In addition to the two IWU players, others elected to the first
team and advancing to the national Academic All-America ballot are forward
Diane Kowall of St. Francis, 3.97, computer science; forward Robyn Ruschmeier,
St. Benedict, 3.87, music; and forward Martha Vest of Illinois College,
3.79, biology. All are seniors.
Second team all-district members are KC Hammond of Millikin,
Dawn Harvey and Angie Hupfer of St. Joseph's (Ind.), Heather Livingstone
of Winona State, and Stacy Ruberg Nelson of Minnesota-Duluth.
