NCAA Division III National Indoor Track Meet
Notes - Saturday, March 12

The University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh won the women's title for the second straight year and the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse claimed the men's title for the fifth straight year at the NCAA Division III indoor track and field championships, held March 11-12 at the Shirk Center on the campus of Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, Ill.

WOMEN

Wisconsin-Oshkosh amassed 36 points to claim the team title, besting Wartburg with 32 points and Amherst with 26 points. Wisconsin-Oshkosh won the event for three straight years in the mid 1990s - 1994, 1995, and 1996 - in addition to last year.

After winning the weight throw on Friday, Wisconsin-Oshkosh junior Robyn Jarocki won the shot put on Saturday, setting a new Shirk Center record at 50 feet-4 inches. Loras sophomore Dana Klemm finished second at 47 feet-7 1/4 inches and Cornell senior Lynn Schneider was third with 46 feet-5 1/2 inches.

Wartburg senior Missy Buttry won the first NCAA Division III mile run with a Division III season best time of 4:43.92, also a Shirk Center record. Sophomore Shauneen Garrahan of Amherst College was second (4:54.78) while senior Gina Lucrezi, of DeSales University got third (4:55.50).

Shonda Jackson, a freshman from Lincoln University, covered the 55 meter dash distance in a time of 7.06 seconds to take first in the event. Sophomore Mechelle Barnwell of City College of N .Y . took second with a time of 7.07 and freshman Precious Macklin, Jackson's teammate at Lincoln University, got third in 7.12 seconds.

Carthage junior Sheana Grigsby defended her title in the 55 hurdles with a time of 8.12 seconds. Haverford sophomore Aislinn Sowash was second at 8.20 seconds and Nebraska Wesleyan junior Amy Vanderkolk was third with a time of 8.27 seconds.

Jenna Mitchler of Wisconsin-Stevens Point ran a time of 2:12.97 to get first place in the 800. The junior's time was a Division III season's best. Jessica Minty, a Colby College junior, was second with a time of 2:13.38 while sophomore Marcia Taddy of Wisconsin-Platteville was third at 2:14.34.

In the 5,000 meter women's run, it was senior Carter Hamill of Amherst College repeating her efforts of 2004 as the winner with a time of 17:02.40. The second place finisher was junior Caroline Cretti, from Williams College (17:14.88) and senior Natalie Retrum of Luther College was third (17:19.21).

Sophomore Bridget Burns of Wartburg turned in a time of 56.68 seconds to win the 400 meter dash as freshman Rachel Anderson of Illinois Wesleyan finished second with her time of 56.75 seconds. In third was senior Melissa Marvin of Wisconsin-La Crosse in a run of 57.78 seconds.

New Jersey City University junior Andrea Herbert jumped 39 feet-10 1/2 inches to win the triple jump in a Division III season best. Wilmington College sophomore Doreen Nagawa was second with a leap of 39 feet-9 1/4 inches while placing third was Tessa Donoghue of Westfield State, also with a distance of 39 feet-9 1/4 inches.

Christyn Schumann, a junior from Trinity (Texas), jumped a Division III season best of 5 feet-8 3/4 inches to claim the high jump crown. Finishing second was junior Kim Deprez of Geneseo S U N Y with her effort of 5 feet-7 3/4 inches and in third was senior Laura Verdegan of Wisconsin-Stout, also at 5 feet-7 3/4 inches.

The College of New Jersey was the winner in the 4x400 relay with a time of 3:52.79. The unit consisted of Brittny Boyd, Carolyn Gray, Angela Tecco, and Tiffany Clark. The second place team was from Washington (Missouri) - Danielle Wadlington, Natalie Badowski, Laura Ehret and Michelle McCully - with a time of 3:52.86. Wisconsin La Crosse (Melissa Marvin, Shelli Gotto, Katie Wagner, and Brooke Whitcher) was third with a time of 3:53.60.


MEN

The University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse scored points in every event on Saturday and won its fifth straight NCAA Division III men's indoor championship and the 12th in school history. The Eagles had 53 points to top Lincoln University with 38 points and Wisconsin-Platteville finished third with 33 points. It is the 20th national title (indoor and outdoor) for Wisconsin-LaCrosse head coach Mark Guthrie.

Wisconsin La Crosse took first in the 4x400 relay with the team of Jeremy Deterville, Tony Marcinek, Nate Olson, and Nolan Hietpas running to a Shirk Center record of 3:15.87. The team of P J Theisen, Carson Glad, Cassidy Glad, Jason Schwietz from the University of St. Thomas was second with a time of 3:16.19 H2 and Lincoln University (Bobby Young, Jeff Jasmin, Keko Goldman, Yudehwheh Gbaa) was third in a time of 3:18.61.

Wisconsin-Platteville senior Ryan Kleimenhagen was a double winner on Saturday, claiming the 800 meter dash in a time of 1:52.98 and won the mile run in a meet record and Shirk Center record time of 4:16.49. In the 800, Brandeis junior Ryan Parker got second with a time of 1:53.52 and junior Jeff Zodda of the College of New Jersey was third in a clocking of 1:54.13. Wisconsin-Platteville took 1-2 in the mile run as freshman Tyler Sigl got second to Kleimenhagen with a run of 4:17.12. Keene State senior Dave Bridgewater placed third with a time of 4:17.88.

Basil Steele, a senior from the University of Dubuque ran a 7.43 second time in the 55 meter hurdles to claim first place in the event for the second straight year. Junior Greg Bolton of Christopher Newport was second (7.46 seconds) and senior Richard Harris of Buffalo State was third with a time of 7.49 seconds. All times were the best in Division III this season.

Freshman Anthony Miles of New Jersey City U. clocked a 6.35 second time in winning the 55 meter dash in a Division III season best time. Sophomore Nick Wetherby of Cortland S U N Y was second in 6.39 seconds and Lincoln University senior Augustine Schmader was third with a time of 6.41 seconds.

Cody Brotherton, a senior from McMurry University, captured the shot put with a distance of 59 feet-2 3/4 inches. It is a season best in Division III as well as a Shirk Center record. John Schuna of Wisconsin Eau Claire placed second (56 feet-4inches) and Wisconsin-Oshkosh sophomore Brandon Houle, who got second in the weight throw Friday, was third at 56 feet-3 1/4 inches.

Otterbein senior Chris Swanson set a Shirk Center record in the pole vault, going a height of 17 feet-5 1/2 inches to claim first place. Junior Nick Pergande of Wisconsin-La Crosse got second at 17 feet-1 1/2 inches and North Central senior Brian DeLoriea finished third at 16 feet-9 1/2 inches.

Aaron Henderson of Wisconsin-Whitewater placed first in the triple jump. The senior covered the leap in 48 feet-6 inches, followed by senior Herc Hyland of Wisconsin-La Crosse (47 feet-11 1/4 inches) and senior Bryson Taylor of Greenville College (47 feet-10 3/4 inches).

Junior Nate Olson of Wisconsin La Crosse improved on his second place finish of a year ago to win the 400 meter dash with a time of 48.11 seconds, a Shirk Center record and a Division III season best. Lincoln University sophomore Bobby Young was second in 48.17 seconds and senior Ernest Gibson of Fisk University was third in 48.74 seconds.
