Steve Berry Named IWU Soccer Coach

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- Steve Berry has been selected as the new men's and women's soccer coach at Illinois Wesleyan University, IWU athletic director Dennie Bridges announced today.

From 1996 to 1998 Berry was head boys and girls soccer coach at Lincoln Community High School, where he has been a physical education and health teacher since 1996 and was freshman head and varsity assistant boys basketball coach from 1997 to 1999.

Since 1998 Berry has been director of coaching for the Bloomington-Normal Soccer Club and has been head coach of the U-12 boys soccer team in Bloomington-Normal. He has also assisted for three years with the Illinois Youth Soccer Association Olympic Development Program in Arlington Heights.

In addition, Berry has served as a coach, counselor and instructor at numerous college and soccer association camps and academies for the past three years.

Berry replaces Tony Bankston as IWU's head soccer coach after serving as Bankston's assistant last fall. In six years, Bankston had a record of 61-44-3 as women's coach and was 47-53-4 as men's coach.

Berry earned a bachelor of science degree in physical education from Illinois State University in 1994 and a bachelor of education degree from St. Ambrose University in 1996. He was the assistant men's soccer coach at St. Ambrose from 1993-96.

As a prep soccer player at Quincy High School, Berry was an honorable mention All-American and was twice chosen all-state, all-sectional, and all-conference.

Berry will also be an instructor of physical education at IWU.
