- IWUs Bernard Named to Second Team of Academic All-America Squads
- BLOOMINGTON, Ill. Illinois Wesleyan University senior Ann Bernard has been named to the second team of the College Division Academic All-Academic womens soccer team.
- A midfielder from St. Charles, Ill. (HS), Bernard is an accounting major with a gradepoint average of 3.83 (on a 4.0 scale). This fall, playing on a team that shared the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin regular season title, she scored eight points on two goals with four assists. She is IWUs all-time leader with 25 assists and fifth leading scorer with 67 career points.
- "I couldn't be happier for Ann," said IWU head soccer coach David Barrett. "This recognition is well-deserved for all the hard work and commitment she has shown in the classroom and on the field the past four seasons. Im incredibly proud of all she has accomplished and we are going to miss her next season."
- A third team all-region choice in 2002, Bernard was a first team all-CCIW selection four years and has been Illinois Wesleyans "Most Valuable Player" in each of her first three seasons. In her four seasons, IWU teams were 55-15-6 (.763 percentage) and were nationally- and regionally-ranked in 2002 and 2003.
- A Deans List student, she is a member of the Alpha Lambda Delta honors society, Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity, the IWU Accounting Society and the IWU Spanish Club. She has been IWUs female fall sports honoree for CCIW Academic All-Conference in 2001 and 2002, served as a resident assistant for her living unit, been an "Ambassador" for the admissions department and has taught Sunday school.
- Bernard is the first soccer player to earn Academic All-America honors at Illinois Wesleyan and her selection brings to 98 the total number of Academic All-America berths earned by IWU student-athletes since the program began in 1970, a total eclipsed by only six other schools, including Nebraska, Notre Dame, Penn State, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
- To be considered for the Academic All-America squads, players must be of at least sophomore standing, have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.2 (of 4.0), and be a starter or first-line reserve. The teams are chosen by a voting board representing the 1,800 members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
