Freshman Irwin Named IWU Women's Tennis “MVP”

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Freshman Lindsay Irwin has been chosen as the ãMost Valuable Playerä for the Illinois Wesleyan University womenâs tennis team.

Irwin (Belleville, West HS) was 12-6 as the Titans’ No. 1 singles player and finished second at the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin tournament. She also teamed with sophomore Diane Arnold for a 5-7 record at No. 1 doubles and was chosen to the first team of the all-CCIW squad selected by league coaches.

“Lindsay is a great tennis player,” said IWU head coach Sally Mangina, whose team placed third in the CCIW championships. “I'm excited that she was recognized by the other CCIW coaches and her teammates.”

Senior captain Krista Vogel (Bloomington HS) was voted “Most Improved Player” by her peersm as she finished with a 12-6 mark at No. 4 singles, where she earned a second place finish in the CCIW meet. “Krista earned the honor by coming on strong at the conference tournament, and by going out match after match and battling her opponents,” Mangina said. “Krista was a fighter and was deserving of her award based on her contributions this year.”

Vogel finished her career with a 46-29 singles record and is 11th all-time in singles wins at IWU.

Arnold (Bloomington HS) was 9-8 at No. 3 singles, where she got second in the CCIW tourney, and was chosen to the second team of the all-CCIW squad. “Diane came on strong in the conference tournament and it’s good to see she was also recognized for her good play by the other coaches in the league,” Mangina said.

Junior Lindy Wick (Highland, Breese Mater Dei), who was named captain for the 2003 team, had a 14-3 record as the Titans’ No. 6 singles player and teamed with Jane Szafraniec (Mt. Prospect, Rolling Meadows HS) for a 14-3 record at No. 3 doubles.

Freshmen Deb Bartell (Wheaton, Glenbard West HS) and Andrea Bulkley (Springfield, Sacred Heart Griffin HS) had impressive debuts in college tennis. Bartell was 13-6 at No. 2 singles while Bulkley had an identical record at No. 5 singles.

Mangina awarded letters to eight players. They are, with hometowns and high schools:

SENIOR - Krista Vogel (Bloomington HS).

JUNIORS - Erika Herrin (Springfield, Southeast HS); Lindy Wick (Highland, Breese Mater Dei).

SOPHOMORE - Diane Arnold (Bloomington HS).

FRESHMEN - Deb Bartell (Wheaton, Glenbard West HS); Andrea Bulkley (Springfield, Sacred Heart Griffin HS); Lindsey Irwin (Belleville, West HS); Jane Szafraniec (Mt. Prospect, Rolling Meadows HS).
