15 January 2001Ogrin Named IWU Women's Tennis MVP
BLOOMINGTON, Ill. — Senior Nikki Ogrin has been named "Most Valuable Player" for the Illinois Wesleyan University women's tennis team.
Ogrin (Waukegan, Carmel HS) posted a 13-7 record at No. 2 singles and had a third place finish in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin tournament. She finished her career with a singles mark of 47-39, good for No. 9 among IWU women tennis players.
Ogrin also paired with freshman Deanna Deschler (Champaign, Central HS) for a 15-6 record and a second place CCIW finish as the No. 1 doubles team.
The Titans, whose only league championship came in 1992, finished third in this season's tournament as Wheaton captured its third straight title.
Other seniors who concluded their careers at IWU were Nicole Skalski (Flossmoor, Homewood-Flossmoor HS) and Nicole Tiberi (Frankfort, Lincoln-Way HS).
Skalski was 11-4 at No. 6 singles and 15-4 overall last fall to improve her career record to 52-20, placing her No. 4 in career wins at Illinois Wesleyan.
Tiberi became the first Titan to win a CCIW singles championship in three seasons when she captured the No. 4 title. She finished the year with a 13-5 mark and is No. 12 all-time at IWU with a 37-23 record.
For the second straight season, junior Alison Oliver (Bannockburn, Woodlands Academy) was selected as the team's "Most Improved Player" in voting done by her teammates.
Oliver was 4-1 overall as a singles player, including a 3-1 record at No. 6, and she teamed with sophomore Krista Vogel (Bloomington HS) for an 11-6 No. 3 doubles record.
Deschler and Erika Herrin (Springfield, Southeast HS) were pleasant surprises as freshmen. Deschler played No. 1 singles and had a 10-10 record while placing third in the conference meet and Herrin was 11-8 overall in singles, playing mostly at No. 5, where she was 8-7.
