IWU Lands 10 on All-CCIW Football Squad

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. — Ten Illinois Wesleyan football players were chosen to the two College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin all-league squads selected by league coaches today in Wheaton.

Offensive tackle Adam Miller and defensive back Kevin Kaplan were repeaters on the first team, joined by wide receiver Eric White, quarterback Josh Akin, linebacker Solomon Jones, and kicker Brian Klesath.

For the second straight year, Kaplan was named as both a defensive back and as a return specialist.

On the all-CCIW second team are sophomore offensive lineman Greg Whisler, senior defensive lineman Willie Chandler, linebacker Mike Clark, and sophomore defensive back Vince Heaton.

Mike Swider of CCIW champion Wheaton was chosen as the "Bob Reade Coach of the Year", while Carthage running back Randall Baker won the "Art Keller Offensive Player of the Year" award and Wheaton linebacker Justin Knapp won the "Don Larson Defensive Player of the Year" honor.

The league honors are named for long-time former CCIW coaches Don Larson of Illinois Wesleyan, Bob Reade of Augustana and Art Keller of Carthage.

First Team All-Conference

Miller (Elgin, Larkin HS), a second team selection as a sophomore, led an offensive line that allowed the offense to average 358.3 yards per game of total offense against CCIW opponents.

Kaplan, a senior from Cary (Cary Grove HS), led the league for the second straight year in punt return average with an 18.2 mark and tied for the league lead with three interceptions per game.

White, a sophomore from Antioch (HS), led the league with 52 catches and 101.7 receiving yards per game.

Akin (Naperville, Benet Academy) was the league leader in both passing (198.4 yards per game) and total offense (244.6). The senior completed 111 passes in 216 attempts for eight touchdowns.

Jones, a junior from Kankakee (HS), was 14th in the CCIW with 50 total tackles, including 30 solo.

Klesath (Peoria, Notre Dame HS) was the league leader in kick scoring with 51 points, connecting on nine of 11 field goals and 24 of 27 extra point kicks. Overall he was sixth in CCIW scoring.

Second Team All-Conference

Like Miller, Whisler (Des Plaines, Maine West HS) helped an offense that was second in the league in passing with 200.3 yards per game and third in scoring (30.4 points per game).

Chandler (St. Louis, Mo., Hazelwood East HS) made 14 solo tackles and assisted on 13 more in CCIW games.

Clark, a senior from Joliet (West HS), was 16th in the league with 47 total tackles, including 24 solo.

Heaton (Wheaton, Wheaton Warrenville South HS) was ninth in the CCIW with 57 total tackles and had 39 solo. He also intercepted two passes for 24 return yards.
