IWUâs Schmidt Earns Honorable Mention All-American Farm Team

Illinois Wesleyan Universityâs Kellie Schmidt has earned honorable mention of the volleyball All American Farm Team sponsored by Dodge Truck and Successful Farming magazine.
Schmidt, a 5-foot-9 senior outside hitter from Mt. Pulaski High School, received a plaque rewarding her selection to the All American Farm Team, a scholastic program honoring collegiate athletes whose home is either a farm or ranch.
She is the daughter of Michael and Laurie Schmidt of rural Elkhart, where Kellie works during school vacations by driving trucks and tractors for the family corn and soybean farm.
A panel of judges consisting of sportswriters, broadcasters, college coaches and sports information directors made the selections and the national announcement was made in the September 1999 issue of Successful Farming, a Meredith Publication with a 1.5 million reader circulation.
Schmidt, a business administration major with a 3.221 grade-point average, is a member of the IWU student marketing group and did an athletic internship at Illinois State University.
On the court, Schmidt is a three-year starter and was a first team all-College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin selection last year after being on the third team as a sophomore. With a good portion of her senior season remaining, she is already IWUâs all-time leader in digs with 1,412 and ranks fifth in kills (1,363), tied for fifth in service aces (173), and 12th in blocks (167).
Last fall Schmidt led IWU in kills (491) for the third straight season and set a school single-season record with 556 digs.
She was just named CCIW "Player of the Week" for the third time in her career, was chosen to the CCIW all-tournament team in 1997 and 1998 and was the Titansâ team captain for the 1997 and 1998 squads that have advanced to NCAA Division III tournament.
The first team of the All American Farm Team volleyball squad consists of Ronda Jo Miller of Gallaudet University; Tracy Ankeny of the University of Nebraska-Omaha; Michele Hallagin of Wichita State; Lynn Olsen of Wisconsin-Whitewater; Bridget Smith of Southwest State; and Augustanaâs Lindsay Voss.
Joining Schmidt as an honorable mention selection are Kam Heger of Western State College; Jessica Kiefer of Evansville; Joleen Meservy of Southwest Missouri State; Mandy Monson of Nebraska; and Jodi Steffes of Clemson.
Last spring, IWUâs Adam Hanes of rural Maroa was selected to the first team of the baseball All American Farm Team.
