The Illinois Wesleyan volleyball team won its first two
matches at the Elmhurst Invitational Friday, defeating Grinnell, 30-19,
30-28, 27-30, 30-15, and Wisconsin Stevens Point, 30-18, 30-19, 30-28.
During the first game IWU was led by Tiffany Hamblin's
43 assists and 17 digs. Beth Crowley led the Titans with 11 kills, while
Molly Jo Ehlert contributed 10 blocks.
In IWU's second game, the Titans got more strong performances
from Hamblin, Crowley and Ehlert. Hamblin led the team with 19 digs and
35 assists, while Crowley earned 13 kills and Ehlert 10 blocks. Liz Niemann
also had a solid all-around performance, chipping in 12 kills and 16 digs.
IWU improved to 5-0 on the season. The tournament continues
today as IWU faces Wittenberg at 10 a.m. and Lake Forest at noon.
Men's soccer triumphs
Larry Kociolek, Szymon Krzyzanowski and David Munz scored
first-half goals and the IWU men's soccer team cruised the rest of the
way to a 3-0 win over Hendrix College at the IWU soccer field.
IWU improved to 2-1-1; Hendrix fell to 0-3.
Kociolek got things started for the Titans 57 seconds
into the game with a goal from the left corner. Chris Bobowski assisted.
Krzyzanowski made it 2-0 at 21:11 with a goal from 6
yards out off a feed from Kociolek. Munz scored three minutes later, assisted
by Clay Scott.
Women win in soccer
Christine Reed and Ann Bernard scored goals to lift the
IWU women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Hendix at the IWU soccer
field.
Reed scored the game's lone first-half goal off an assist
from Julie Brooks. Bernard scored unassisted in the second half to
give IWU (3-0) a 2-0 lead.
Hendrix (2-1) avoided a shutout on Becca Carle's goal
at the 59:36 mark.
Runners shine
The IWU women's cross country team placed fifth in the
16-team North Central Invitational while the Titan men placed eighth.
The Titan women scored 134 points while Wheaton won with
62. Freshman Brooke Lade led IWU in 17th, clocking 20 minutes, 37.4 seconds
on the 5,000-meter course. St. Xavier's Mary Farrell won in 18:27.2.
IWU scored 203 points in the men's division, which was
won by the North Central Alums with 22.
Freshman Tim Hachmeister led the Titans, placing 11th
on the 5-mile course in 27:24.28.
