Weinert Repeats as Titan Tennis MVP

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- For the second consecutive season, Phil Weinert has been named "Most Valuable Player" for the Illinois Wesleyan University men’s tennis team.

In the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin meet, Weinert (Geneva HS) earned a second place finish at No. 1 singles and teamed with senior Doug Kasper (Castle Rock, Colo., Plymouth, Minn. Totino HS) for a second at No. 3 doubles.

Weinert, a first team all-CCIW selection, was 20-8 overall in singles this season and ended his career with a 58-34 singles mark, good for No. 3 all-time in singles victories at Illinois Wesleyan. Weinert and Kasper paired for an 11-3 record at No. 3 doubles.

Freshman Pat Fischer (Hawthorn Woods, St. Viator HS) earned the team's "Most Improved Player" honor. Fischer had a 12-14 overall singles record and was 9-14 at No. 4 singles, where he earned a fourth place finish in the CCIW meet.

Junior Will Weltman (Deerfield HS) was 17-11 in singles, earned a second place finish at No. 2 singles in the CCIW meet and paired with freshman Jason Love (Antioch, Community HS) for a 20-7 record at No. 1 doubles, earning a regional ranking at one point of the season.

A second team all-CCIW honoree, Weltman improved to 42-29 in three seasons and is No. 10 in all-time victories at IWU.

Head coach John Fish awarded letters to seven players, four of whom return for next spring. The lettermen are, with hometowns and high schools:

SENIORS - Andy Giordano (Willow Springs, Nazareth Academy), Doug Kasper (Castle Rock, Colo., Totino Grace HS), Phil Weinert (Geneva HS).
JUNIOR - Will Weltman (Deerfield HS).
FRESHMEN - Pat Fischer (Hawthorn Woods, St. Viator HS), Jason Love (Antioch, Community HS), Dan Zurakov (Niles, North HS).
