BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- Sophomore Billy Smith, who was the team's low scorer seven times this spring, has been chosen "Most Valuable Player" for the 2002 Illinois Wesleyan University men's golf team.
With a two-day total of 150, Smith (Champaign, Central HS) tied for third place individually with freshman teammate Eric Hellman (Bloomington, Normal West HS) to help the Titans to their second straight College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin championship.
For the season, Smith averaged 79.3 strokes in 18-hole rounds and shot a season-best 69 on April 19 at the two-day, 17-team Big Blue Invitational, where he was second individually.
Hellman posted the team's lowest stroke average at 78.3 in 15 rounds this spring and earned all-CCIW honors along with Smith and sophomore Bryan Noonan (Champaign, Centennial HS), whose 152 total placed fifth in the conference meet.
Sophomore Chad Golembeck (Petersburg, Porta HS), who was the 2001 MVP and CCIW medalist, and freshman Eric Danielson (Channahon, Minooka HS) each averaged 80.3 strokes during the season and tied for 22nd in the conference tournament.
Head coach Jim Ott awarded letters to seven players, all sophomores and freshmen. They are, with hometowns and high schools:

FRESHMEN - Eric Danielson, Channahon (Minooka HS); Eric Hellman, Bloomington (Normal West HS); Mickey Stefan, Chicago (Notre Dame HS); Greg Tester, Princeton (HS).
