BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- Sophomore pitcher Steve Schilsky has been chosen
"Player of the Year" and Dennis Martel was named "Coach of the Year"
for
baseball in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin, chosen
in voting by
CCIW coaches Tuesday.
Schilsky was named to the first team of the all-CCIW squad along with
teammates
Ryan Gilfillan and Jeremy Hunt.
Titans on the second team are seniors Tony Merritt, Haneef Omar and
Adam
Palmer, and freshman Kevin Morris.
It marks the fourth time an IWU player has been named CCIW "Player of
the
Year" since the honor started in 1980. James Rinne earned the honor
in 1998,
Mike Brown won it in 1991 and James Shaw was the league's first honoree
in
1980.
Schilsky, a righthander from Springfield (Sacred Heart Griffin HS),
led the
conference in wins (with a 5-1 record), earned run average (1.37) and
strikeouts
(72 in 46 innings). His 72 strikeouts falls just two short of the CCIW
season record
of 74, set by North Central's John Ferri in 1969.
Gilfillan, a sophomore second baseman from Peoria (Notre Dame HS), batted
.362 in 21 conference games with a CCIW-best eight doubles, two homers
and 15
runs batted in. He also scored 19 runs.
Hunt, a sophomore centerfielder from Champaign (Centennial HS), hit
.369 with
eight doubles and tied for the team lead with 16 runs batted in vs.
CCIW
opponents. He was 10 of 11 in steal attempts and scored 17 runs.
Merritt, a third baseman from Decatur (MacArthur HS), tied for the league
lead
with five home runs. He batted .303 with 16 RBI in 21 league games.
Omar, a rightfielder from Rockford (Guilford HS), led the Titans in
CCIW play
with 23 runs scored. He batted .342 with three home runs and 12 RBI.
Morris, a designated hitter from Ridgewood (HS), batted a team-high
.379 against
CCIW foes. He collected six doubles, a triple and a home run and tied
for the team
lead with 16 RBI.
Palmer, a righthanded pitcher from Naperville (North HS), was a first
team
all-CCIW selection a year ago. This spring he was 4-2 with a 3.43 earned
run
average in conference play. In 39 1/3 innings he struck out 31 and
walked 12.
The Titans were 15-6 in the CCIW and won the league regular season and
tournament championships. IWU takes a 33-12-1 overall record into the
NCAA
Division III regional tournament, which begins Thursday at IWU's Jack
Horenberger Field.
