BLOOMINGTON, Ill. ? Three members of the Illinois Wesleyan softball
team were chosen to the first team of the College Conference of Illinois
and Wisconsin all-league softball squad and three more earned second team
honors from the league champion Titans.
The first team selections were junior pitcher Kelly Murray, sophomore
infielder Colleen Schuster and sophomore outfielder Brynn Hasse, while
junior catcher Kat Mason, junior second baseman Jamie Palmer, and senior
outfielder Stephanie Stephen were chosen to the second team.
Beth Hasheider, who led IWU to its second straight CCIW title,
was named “Coach of the Year.”
Murray (Bloomington, Central Catholic HS) was also a first team
choice last year and was “Pitcher of the Year” in the league in 2002. Against
the league this spring she had a 6-1 record with a 1.19 earned run average
and struck out 28 in 41 1/3 innings. As a hitter she batted .325 with a
homer and nine RBI.
Schuster (Joliet HS), who also repeats as a first team selection,
was fourth in the league with a .463 average and was second with 14 RBI.
Hasse (Chillicothe, IVC HS) led the conference with a .604 batting
average and also led the CCIW in hits (29), runs (18), triples (five),
and total bases (40). She had an on-base percentage of .588 and an .833
slugging percentage.
Mason (Galesburg HS), a first team all-CCIW player in 2002, batted
.324 in CCIW games with three doubles, three home runs and 12 runs batted
in.
Palmer (Knoxville HS) batted .474 in CCIW games, good for third
in the conference. She had three doubles and a home run.
Stephen (Martinsville, Casey-Westfield HS), who was the league’s
“Player of the Year” in 2000 as a freshman, batted .333 in 14 league games
this spring with two doubles, a homer, and 14 runs batted in.
Titans Earn Academic all-District Honors
Stephanie Stephen and senior pitcher A.J. Reeley (Danville HS)
were elected to the second team of the Verizon District Five all-academic
squad, chosen by members of the College Sports Information Directors of
America (CoSIDA).
Stephen has a 3.60 grade-point average as an elementary education
major and Reeley, who was first team academic all-district the past two
seasons, has a 3.78 grade-point average as a math/risk management major.
The all-district teams were chosen by a vote of CoSIDA members
in Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and the Canadian provinces
of Manitoba and Ontario. To be considered for the Verizon/CoSIDA Academic
All-America squads, players must be of at least sophomore standing, have
a cumulative grade-point average of 3.2 (of 4.0), and be a starter or first-line
reserve.
