Titans' Schilsky Earns League Honors

Illinois Wesleyan righthanded pitcher Steve Schilsky was virtually unhittable last week and he has been selected as the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin "Player of the Week" for the week ending April 29.

Schilsky, a sophomore from Springfield (Sacred Heart Griffin HS), worked a total of 17 innings and struck out 31 batters while walking just three. He only allowed two earned runs and seven hits and was 2-0 with victories over Elmhurst and North Park.

He struck out 15 batters against Elmhurst and 16 against North Park. Earlier this season, he struck out 14 North Central hitters. For the season, Schilsky has struck out 70 in 49 innings, which ties him for No. 3 in an Illinois Wesleyan single season. He trails Brett Robinson, who fanned 89 in 1986, and IWU senior Matt Fehland, who struck out 72 in 1999. Also with 70 strikeouts in a season is Rich Balcaitis (1997).

Schilsky's totals rank third through fifth in IWU single game records, behind only Bill Marsh, who fanned 20 against Illinois State in a 12-inning game in 1948, and Ralph Bruck, who struck out 17 Elmhurst batters in a 1954 contest.
