Titans Hasse, Murray Named CCIW's Top Performers

3 May 2004

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Illinois Wesleyan senior Kelly Murray and junior centerfielder Brynn Hasse have been chosen as the pitcher and player of the year, respectively, in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin in voting done by league coaches.

Murray and Hasse were joined on the first team of the all-CCIW squad by sophomore first baseman Katie Frawley, senior second baseman Jamie Palmer and senior designated hitter Lisa Krapf. Selected to the second team were senior catcher Kat Mason, sophomore outfielder Natalie Hackett and freshman utility player Molly Coers.

With her selection this spring, Murray (Bloomington, Central Catholic HS) becomes a three-time first team all-CCIW choice and was also named as the league’s “Pitcher of the Year” in 2002. Against the league this season she was 7-1 with a 0.98 earned run average and struck out 34 in 57 innings. As a hitter she batted .391 with a homer and two RBI.

Hasse (Chillicothe, IVC HS), a repeat first team selection, was second in the league with a .426 batting average and led the league with 20 hits, seven stolen bases and a .500 on-base percentage.

Frawley (Oswego, N.Y., HS) was fifth in the CCIW with a .375 batting average and had one home run and five runs batted in.

Palmer (Knoxville HS), a second team all-CCIW choice in 2003, tied for the league lead with seven doubles and had a .295 batting average.

Krapf (Monee, Peotone HS) batted .333 and tied Palmer for the league lead with seven doubles against conference opponents.

Mason (Galesburg HS) was a second team all-league selection last season and a first team all-CCIW player in 2002. This spring she hit .240 with three RBI in league play.

Hackett (New Lenox, Lincoln-Way HS) batted .333 in conference games with one home run and 10 runs batted in, which tied for second in the conference.

Coers (Manito, Midwest Central HS), who played shortstop and was a designated hitter, led the league with a .455 batting average and tied Hasse for most hits with 20. Her .467 on-base percentage was third best in the CCIW.

Illinois Wesleyan was co-champion of the CCIW regular season with an 11-3 mark but was eliminated from the conference tournament last weekend. IWU finished with a 31-10 overall record, marking the fifth straight year the Titans have won 30 or more games.
