Nelson "MVP" for IWU Women’s Golf

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- For the second straight season, Gail Nelson has been chosen as the "Most Valuable Player" for the Illinois Wesleyan University women's golf team.
Nelson, a junior from Frankfort (Lincoln-Way HS), was IWU's low scorer in eight of 14 meets and posted a team-best 84.3 average for 21 18-hole rounds in the fall and spring seasons. She was the medalist at the nine-team Carthage Invitational and placed second in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin tournament and the Augustana Invitational.
Sophomore Ann Martin (Roanoke-Benson HS) was IWU's low scorer four times and finished second to Nelson with an 86.3 scoring average while senior team captain Melissa McMahon (Minier, Stanford Olympia HS) averaged 88.0 per round last season and was the low scorer in two events.
The Titans, who placed sixth in the national 2000 NCAA Division III championship, placed second in the CCIW tournament last fall.
Head coach Kathy Niepagen awarded letters to six players. They are, with hometowns and high schools:
SENIORS - Amy Cline (Decatur, Eisenhower HS), Melissa McMahon (Minier, Stanford Olympia HS).
JUNIOR - Gail Nelson (Frankfort, Lincoln-Way HS).
SOPHOMORES - Ann Martin (Bloomington, Roanoke-Benson HS), Stephanie Morton (Elgin, Larkin HS).
FRESHMAN - Erin Williams (Quincy, Notre Dame HS).
