Illinois Wesleyan Lands El Paso's Uphoff
BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- El Paso High School basketball standout
Phil Uphoff has decided to attend Illinois Wesleyan University to continue
his academic and athletic career, IWU athletic director Dennie Bridges
announced today.
As a senior, the 6-foot-4, 170 pound Uphoff averaged 18 points and
eight rebounds per game and was named to the third team of the Class A
all-state squad.
"Phil has spent a lot of time at the Shirk Center, playing in the Holiday
Classic and watching his sister (Cindy) play for the IWU women's team,"
said Bridges. "My hope was that this gave us an advantage with Phil knowing
he could also be part of this excitement.
"He is an outstanding student in the classroom and, as a player, he
is going to get nothing but better as he gets bigger and stronger."
For his career, Uphoff set the Comets' high school record with 1,695
points and 861 rebounds. He was a three-time unanimous all-conference selection,
was twice chosen to The Pantagraph all-area squad, and earned honorable
mention all-state as a junior.
He was also recently named to The Pantagraph's all-decade basketball
team.
IWU junior Cindy Uphoff led the Titan women with 11.6 scoring and 7.1
rebounding averages and shot .587 from the field. After three seasons,
she is No. 14 in school history with 482 career rebounds and is also 14th
with 276 field goals made. She is 11th in career free throws (with 154)
and No. 20 in IWU career scoring with 706 points.
The Uphoffs are children of Mike and Diana Uphoff of rural El Paso.
