BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- Kathy Carroll and Jeremy Melick were chosen as the "Most Valuable Performers" for the Illinois Wesleyan University women's and men's swim teams, respectively.
Carroll, a freshman from Orland Park (Sandburg HS), displaced her sister, Laura, who had been IWU's swim "MVP" the past two seasons. Kathy was an NCAA Division III All-American as she placed 14th in the 400 individual medley and 16th in the 500 freestyle at the national meet, where she also placed 19th in the 1650 freestyle.
Kathy's individual school records this winter came in the 1000 and 1650 freestyle, the 200 butterfly, and the 200 and 400 individual medley events. She was also a member of five record-setting relay teams. She had first-place finishes in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin meet in the 1650 free and the 400 IM, while placing third in the 200 individual medley.
Melick, a senior from Danvers (Stanford Olympia HS), had IWU's best time in the 100 backstroke at 57.94 seconds and was part of the 200 and 400 medley and 200 free relay teams.
In addition to Kathy Carroll, other all-CCIW performers for the women were junior Laura Carroll (Orland Park, Sandburg HS), sophomore Bethany Schoenbeck (Lockport HS) and freshman Lisa Diersen (Park Forest, Rich East HS). Laura Carroll was all-CCIW in the 100 free and Schoenbeck was all-league in the 50 free and 100 butterfly. They teamed with Kathy Carroll and Diersen for all-conference honors in the 200 free relay and 400 medley relay.
The IWU women's team finished third in the CCIW meet while the men's team placed fourth.
During the season, Laura Carroll swam to new school records in the 50 and 100 free events and Diersen set records in the 100 and 200 breaststroke.
Sophomore Megan Rettberg (Elk Grove, Conant HS) was chosen as the "Most Improved Performer" for the women's team while senior Don Kura (Park Ridge, Maine South HS) earned the same honor for the men's team. Rettberg was a member of school record 200 medley and 800 freestyle relay teams.
