JACKSON, Miss. -- Chad Rock and Andy Brandt each
drove home two runs to help the Illinois Wesleyan baseball team defeat
Division III power Millsaps, 7-5, in the first game of a double-header
Wednesday.
Millsaps prevailed in the second game, 12-1.
Adam Palmer (2-1) pitched the first five innings of the
IWU victory, allowing five earned runs. Scott Schiller worked the final
two innings for his first save.
Justin Cripe and Ryan Gilfillan knocked in a run each
for the Titans.
"I was really happy with the first game," IWU coach Dennis
Martel said. "We gutted it out and got a win against an outstanding team."
Millsaps improved to 18-3 with the win in the nightcap.
Starter Steve Brook (1-2) took the loss for the Titans.
Mike Mazzone drove in the only IWU run.
"The second game was bad pitching, bad defense and bad
offense," said Martel.
KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- The Illinois Wesleyan softball
team improved its season record to 6-2 Wednesday by winning a pair of games
on its spring trip.
During the first game, the Titans scored seven runs during
the third inning on their way to beating Hope, 9-3. IWU was led at the
plate by Sara Powers, who smashed a double and had three RBI.
"That was a breakout hitting game and we played good
defense," IWU coach Mandy Neal said.
A.J. Reeley kept her pitching record perfect for the
Titans at 3-0 by hurling seven innings and giving up only nine hits and
three runs while walking none.
During the second game, IWU scored two runs in the bottom
of the sixth inning on a two-run single by Stephanie Hieser to break a
2-2 tie and beat Eastern Connecticut, 4-2. Kate Molina smashed a solo home
run for the Titans.
Ellen Furr threw a complete game victory, allowing no
earned runs or walks while striking out four. She upped her record to 2-2.
IWU continues its spring trip today when it battles
Springfield at 5 p.m. and Manchester at 7 p.m.
