David Barrett Named
Illinois Wesleyan Soccer Coach

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- David Barrett has been selected as the new men's and women's soccer coach at Illinois Wesleyan University, IWU athletic director Dennie Bridges announced today.

Since 1997 Barrett has been an assistant coach of men's soccer at Yale University, where his duties included training, scouting, and recruitment. In his four seasons at Yale, the team had a 43-23-4 record and, in 1999, the Bulldogs were 13-5-1, reached the NCAA round of 16, and were No. 18 in the final national poll.

"I'm very excited at the opportunity to take over both programs," said Barrett. "There's a lot of potential there and I'm eager to get going and build on the successes of the past."

Barrett said he was impressed with what he saw in his visit to Illinois Wesleyan. "The school has great facilities and people. After being an assistant at a successful program, it's going to be a good challenge for me to take over as a collegiate head coach," he said.

Barrett earned a bachelor of arts degree in 1993 from Wesleyan University, where he was a three-year starter, including 41 straight games. A goalkeeper, Barrett holds the school's career record for victories (with 36), shutouts (17.5) and goals against average (0.80). His 1991 team was 15-1-1, won the East Coast Athletic Conference and Little Three championships, and were ranked No. 7 nationally in NCAA Division III.

He was the head soccer coach for the Connecticut Olympic Development Program from 1997-98, working with 25 boys in the under-14 and under-15 age group. Barrett was head boys' soccer coach at Suffield Academy (Conn.) from 1995-97 and head coach of boys' soccer at Bridgton Academy (Maine) in 1994-95.

Since 1998 Barrett has also been camp director for the Junior Bulldog Soccer Camp for Boys and Girls.

Barrett will also be an instructor of physical education at IWU.
