Schilsky leads IWU baseball win

CLINTON, Miss -- Steve Schilsky took charge on the mound as the Illinois Wesleyan baseball team edged Mississippi College 2-1 in 10 innings Tuesday at Frierson Field.
"The storyline was Steve Schilsky," said IWU coach Dennis Martel, whose team improved to 5-3-1 on its spring trip. "He was dominating."
Schilsky (1-0) gave up just six hits and the only run he allowed was unearned. Schilsky, who walked just two and struck out 11, got the pitching win when teammate Tony Merritt singled home Haneef Omar in the top of the 10th inning.
"We got pitching and defense and a timely hit," Martel said. "It was a great win -- we had lots of perseverance and we just executed when we had to."
The teams were originally scheduled to play two games but played just one nine-inning contest because of cold, wet conditions.
The Titans scored their first run in the second inning on an RBI single by Justin Cripe, his second hit of the game. Omar also had two hits.
Mississippi losing pitcher Daniel Wright (0-2) was nearly as dominating as Schilsky, allowing just one earned run on eight hits.
Today, the Titans play Millsaps College of Jackson, Miss.

IWU softball earns a split

KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- The Illinois Wesleyan softball team downed Ramapo (N.J.) 3-1 to salvage a split of its two games Monday at Oceola Stadium.

A.J. Reeley (2-0) limited Ramapo to just four hits and one earned run in a route-going performance. Kristen Prather had half of IWU's four hits.
In the first game, Coe led just 2-0 before breaking the game open with two runs in the bottom of the fifth and three in the sixth. IWU starter Ellen Furr (1-2) suffered the pitching loss despite giving up just two earned runs. She walked one and struck out five in 4Â innings.
Winning pitcher Laura Biechler allowed just three hits and no earned runs. Abby Kite led the Coe offense with three hits, and Kristen Smith and Angie Witte each belted solo home runs.
