IWU's Dauksas Named CCIW "Player of the Year"

28 February 2005

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. — Illinois Wesleyan junior Adam Dauksas has been named “Fred Young Most Outstanding Player” for men’s basketball in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin in voting today by league coaches.

A 6-foot-3 guard from Flossmoor (Homewood-Flossmoor HS), Dauksas is the 16th Titan winner of the CCIW top player honor and follows teammate Keelan Amelianovich, last year’s winner.

Dauksas and Amelianovich were both first team selections and Zach Freeman was selected to the second team.

For the third consecutive season, IWU’s Scott Trost earned “Coach of the Year” honors as he directed the Titans to the league championship and a berth in the NCAA Division III tournament.

Dauksas, who was a second team selection last year, led the CCIW in assists (5.14) and in assist/turnover ratio (2.67) while finishing third in both steals (1.57) and free throw accuracy (.871, 54-of-62). He was eighth in scoring (15.1) and 15th with a .483 field goal percentage (69-of-143).

Amelianovich, a 6-foot-6 forward from Naperville (Neuqua Valley HS), is a first team repeat selection. He led the league with 2.43 3-pointers per game and was second with a .532 3-point shooting percentage. He was third in the conference in scoring (17.0) and fourth in free throw percentage (.850, 34-of-40), as well as No. 11 in field goal accuracy (.500, 85-of-170) and 14th in rebounds (4.4)

Freeman, a 6-foot-7 sophomore forward from Blooomington (Normal Community HS), was a third team selection as a freshman. A leg injury limited him to playing in only 10 league games, in which he averaged 14.8 points and 6.2 rebounds. He shot .558 from the field (53-of-95).

Trost’s team went 12-2 in CCIW action, earning Illinois Wesleyan’s 27th conference championship since the league started in 1946. IWU has had 13 other squads finish second in league play.

IWU junior Matt Arnold (Bloomington, Ind., Edgewood HS) led the conference in field goal percentage (.613, 49-of-80) and in 3-point accuracy (.553, 21-of-38). As a team, IWU led the conference statistics in scoring offense (78.9), defense (67.5), and scoring margin (11.4); field goal percentage (.543), field goal percentage defense (.429), 3-point accuracy (.469), and defensive rebounds (24.36).

Fred Young “Most Outstanding Player” Award

In addition to Amelianovich last year, other IWU winners have been Korey Coon (1999 and 2000), Brent Niebrugge (1998), Bryan Crabtree (1997), Chris Simich (1995), John Lipic (1994), David Caldwell (1991), Jeff Kuehl (1989), Blaise Bugajski (1984), Greg Yess (1982), Sikma (1975, 1976, 1977) and Tom Gramkow (1970).

The award is named for 1915 IWU graduate Fred Young, who was the conference’s first commissioner and served in the position for 17 years. He was a longtime sports editor of The Pantagraph and starred at IWU in basketball, baseball and tennis. The former fieldhouse at Illinois Wesleyan’s was named in his honor.
