Bernard "MVP" for IWU Women's Soccer

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. ­ For the third straight season,Ann Bernard has been named “Most Valuable Player” for the Illinois Wesleyan University women’s soccer team.

Bernard, a junior midfielder from St. Charles (HS), scored five goals and added eight assists in 2002. She represented the 13-4-2 Titans as a first team all-College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin selection and third team Division III all-Central Region selection, in addition to improving her career totals of 19 goals and 21 assists, placingher in sixth placeall-time on the Titan scoring list.

Bernard and junior back Lauren Boegen(Warren HS) were chosen to serve as co-captains for the 2003 team.

Sophomore midfielder Kristin Wood (Sycamore HS) was chosen as the team's "Most Improved Player."

Bernard, sophomore Marisa Johnson (Wayne, St. Charles East HS) and freshmen Mary Karson (St. Charles HS) and Katie Kelly (Wheaton, Wheaton-Warrenville South HS) were the Titans' offensive leaders in 2002.

Johnson, a first team all-CCIW selection, scored five goals and added six assists to raise her career totals to 11 goals and 11 assists. She is currently IWU's 10th leading scorer all-time with 33 points.

Karson, a first team all-CCIW player as well as a first team Division III all-Central Region selection, scored eight goals with two assists and tied for the team lead with 18 points.

Kelly, a midfielder, netted seven goals with two assists, giving her 16 points on the season.She had two two-goal games against Millikin and North Central.

Senior goalkeeper Alicia Heeger (Manchester, Mo., Lafayette HS) and Boegen were both selected as second team all-CCIW. It is Heeger’s third time as an all-league choice as she was voted in as a defender as a freshman. Last fall Heeger posted five shutouts and a .74 goals against average.

Barrett awarded 22 letters to women's soccer players, including 21 to players who will return next season. The letterwinners are, with hometowns and high schools:

JUNIORS - Ann Bernard (St. Charles HS), Lauren Boegen (Waukegan, Warren HS), Kristin Riek (Delafield, Wis., Kettle Moraine HS).

SOPHOMORES - Zaya Fusco (Lake Bluff, Freeport HS), Alissa Hunt (Glen Ellyn, Glenbard West HS), Marisa Johnson (Wayne, St. Charles East HS), April Naylor (Geneva HS), Jessica Pyzyna (Arlington Heights, Hersey HS), Stephanie Travers (Maryville, Rosati-Kain HS), Kristin Wood (Sycamore HS)/
