December 10, 2004

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. — Jennifer White Reding, currently a study abroad advisor at Washington University in St. Louis, has been named Director of the International Office at Illinois Wesleyan University.

Janet McNew, provost at Illinois Wesleyan, announced Reding’s appointment, which will be effective Jan. 1, 2005.

"Jennifer brings extensive experience working with undergraduates at both Washington University and Kalamazoo College, but she also has considerable personal experience with international study from her graduate school education in Japan," said McNew. "She will bring a great deal of enthusiasm to this position, and we are happy that she has agreed to join the University."

Reding is a 1993 Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Harvard University, where she majored in English and East Asian Studies. Following her graduation from Harvard, she spent two years as program coordinator for the Program on U.S. Japan Relations of Harvard’s Center for International Affairs. In 1995, she left Harvard for Japan where she was Monbusho Visiting Research Student at Tokyo University while also teaching English as a Second Language. She then earned a master’s degree in comparative culture from International Christian University in Tokyo where she also conducted Ph.D. research in comparative culture.

In April 2002, she joined the Center for International Programs at Kalamazoo College. She was program manager for the Center for Asian Studies as well as study abroad advisor for Asia. She also served as an adjunct faculty member in Kalamazoo’s Department of Japanese.

White became a study abroad advisor in the Office of Overseas Programs at Washington University in August 2003. She was responsible for advising and reviewing applications for more than 250 students annually in 45 approach study abroad programs.

At Illinois Wesleyan, White will work both with the study abroad programs that the University offers as well as serving as an adviser to the international students attending the University.
