Illinois Wesleyan’s Student Nurses’ Association Raises $1,000 for Breast Cancer Research

November 1, 2004

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- One out of eight women will get breast cancer in their lifetime, according to the American Cancer Society, accounting for the second largest amount of deaths by cancer among women. For this reason, Illinois Wesleyan University’s Student Nurses’ Association is raising funds for breast cancer research.

After a week of selling awareness T-shirts and handing out pink ribbons to promote breast cancer research, the association raised over $1,000 for the Susan G. Komen Foundation, a fund working toward eradicating breast cancer through research, education, screening and treatment.

Having ordered 100 T-shirts to sell, the Student Nurses’ Association sold out and had to order over 150 additional shirts. Student Nurses’ Association President Melissa Giegerich said the hardest part about the sales was keeping up with the demand for T-shirts.

“As student nurses, we saw it as our responsibility to raise awareness and contribute to research efforts,” said Giegerich. “The response was amazing.”

The Illinois Wesleyan chapter of Student Nurses’ Association was established in 1993 to give nursing students a place to meet and support other nursing students on campus. Its mission is to organize, represent and mentor student nurses, promote the development of skills needed as responsible and accountable members of the nursing profession and to advocate for high quality health care.
