Laboratory Theatre Presents Albert’s Bridge and The Brides

September 30, 2004

BLOOMINGTON, Ill.--This October the Illinois Wesleyan University E. Melba Johnson Kirkpatrick Laboratory Theatre will be taking on Albert’s Bridge and The Brides. The plays are both designed, directed, and performed by IWU students. The Laboratory Theatre is located next to McPherson Theatre, 304 E. Graham St., Bloomington.

Albert’s Bridge, Oct. 28-30 at 8 p.m. and Oct. 31 at 2 p.m.--Written by Thomas Stoppard, student directed by Alison Daigle, this play requires only microphones as a set. As the actors stand at the mikes to perform the drama, it is necessary that they intensely convey their emotion and the action that takes place, for the audience has to visualize what they hear.

Albert is a philosophy graduate who decided that instead of following in his father’s footsteps, he would become the painter of a suspension bridge. He is soon consumed by the fascination his work holds for him, and the play follows how his life at home and at work change as he risks it all.

The Brides, to be performed along with Albert’s Bridge--Written by Harry Kondoleon, student directed by Jac Jemc, this is a musical fantasy which takes place in the mind of a mythical bride moments before she is to enter the church to be married. The groom is the bride’s knight in shining armor, which turns out to be both a dream and a curse as the bride realizes that not everything she wants is everything it is cracked up to be. The play takes on the form of a fairy tale, as it holds no stage directions or character assignments.

The Brides, which deals with adult themes, is said by critics to be funny, fantastical, and odd.
