To Speak at Illinois Wesleyan

BLOOMINGTON, Ill.—On Thursday, Oct. 7 at Illinois Wesleyan University, physician, humanist and advocate for nuclear disarmament Helen Caldicott will present a talk entitled “The Age of Nuclear Terrorism.” The presentation will be at 4:30 p.m. in the Center for Natural Science (CNS), room C101, 201 Beecher St., Bloomington.

Caldicott’s talk will be followed by a book signing of her most recent work, The New Nuclear Danger: George Bush’s Military Industrial Complex (2002) and her updated 1979 classic Nuclear Madness: What You Can Do.

Open and free to the public, Caldicott’s visit is being co-sponsored by IWU’s Environmental Studies Program, The Physics Department, the International Studies Diplomatic Studies Team, and the Women’s Studies Program.

Later that evening at 7 p.m., on the campus of Illinois State University, in the Old Main Room of the Bone Student Center, Caldicott will speak on the same subject in a talk sponsored by the Student Environmental Action Coalition and Global Review.

Trained as a physician, Caldicott has devoted the last 35 years to an international campaign to educate the public about the medical hazards of a nuclear age. She is the founder and president of the Nuclear Policy Research Institute (NPRI) and the co-founder of Physicians for Social Responsibility, an organization of 23,000 doctors committed to educating their colleagues about the dangers of nuclear power, nuclear weapons and nuclear war.

The author of five books, Caldicott has received numerous awards for her work and was nominated by Linus Pauling in 1985 for the Nobel Peace Prize and was named one of the most influential women of the 20th century by the Smithsonian Institute. Most recently, Caldicott was awarded the Lannan Foundation’s 2003 Prize for Cultural Freedom.
