Background: In celebration of Black History Month, the Illinois Wesleyan University History Department, International Studies Program and Multicultural Affairs is bringing the Rev. Peter Nash to campus. Nash is a current professor of Old Testament and Semitic Languages and directs a project for researching Blacks in the Bible and ancient times at the Lutheran School of Theology and Ecumenical Institute of Graduate Studies in Theology, Sao Leopoldo, Brazil.
Nash is the first African-American doctoral graduate of the Oriental Institute at the University of Chicago, where he earned a degree in Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations. He has taught at Garrett- Evangelical Theological Seminary, Evanston, served as visiting professor at the Lutheran School of Theology, Chicago, and has held visiting professorships in Germany and in Mozambique. Nash also has held various lectureships, workshops and seminars in Europe, the Middle East and the United States and has published numerous articles and a book entitled, Negras Historias no Rio Grande do Sul.
In addition to a doctorate from the University of Chicago, Nash holds degrees from Princeton Theological Seminary and Concordia Senior College, Fort Wayne, Ind.
