Background: Singer-songwriter Susan Werner, on her ninth visit to IWU, will be playing hits from her newest album, I Can’t Be New. Werner has had five previously released albums: Midwestern Saturday Night (1991), Live at the Tin Angel (1993), Last of the Good Straight Girls (1995), Time Between Trains (1999), and New Non-Fiction (2001). Werner said that she would describe I Can’t Be New as, “Carole King’s tapestry meets Ella Fitzgerald’s Cole Porter Songbook.”

Werner was born and raised in Iowa where she played the guitar since she was 5 years old. When she was 22 Werner moved to Philadelphia and studied opera at Temple University where she earned her master’s degree in music. However, playing the guitar still fascinated her, and soon interest in the guitar and writing music overcame her opera aspirations.

Werner has received raves from numerous critics, including New Yorker Magazine, which said that Werner is a “clever songwriter and engaging performer.” According to Werner’s producer, “You can’t listen to this record without getting a lump in your throat at least once-and I’m betting it’ll be more than once.”
