Background: The Reverend Peter Nash is a visiting professor of religion and philosophy at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa. Nash became the first African American Ph.D. graduate of the Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago in near eastern languages and civilizations in 1992. He also holds degrees from Princeton Theological Seminary (M.Div.) and Concordia Senior College, Fort Wayne, Ind. (A.B.).
Nash, known for his special research that focuses on the presence of blacks in the ancient and modern worlds, is the author of Negras Historias no Rio Grande do Sul (2002) and Reading Race, Reading the Bible (2003) in addition to numerous articles.
From 1996 to 2003 Nash was professor of Old Testament and Semitic Languages and directed a project for researching Blacks in the Bible and in ancient times at the Lutheran School of Theology and Ecumenical Institute of Graduate Studies in Theology, Sao Leopoldo, Brazil.
Nash has taught at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary, served as a visiting professor at the Lutheran School of Theology, Chicago, and has held visiting professorships in Germany and Mozambique. He has also held various lectureships and seminars in Europe, the Middle East and the United States.
