This essay will be based on the film, The House of the Spririts (1994), Dir. Bille August. Perf. Meryl Streep, Jeremy Irons, Glenn Close, Winona Ryder, and Antonio Banderas. The film is based on the novel La casa de los espíritus written by Isabel Allende.

Tema: Write an essay in which you analyze the theme of injustice OR the role of the Latin American women in the film.

1) First draft.

First paragraph: 

• Does your first paragraph have an introduction? Can the reader understand what you're writing about without seeing the film? (When you refer to the movie as "película" use it's title and author's name.)
• Does the last sentence of your first paragraph state the main focus of your essay? You'll have to backup that focus with details in the body of the essay.  Your main idea should be the completion of this sentence: The main idea of this essay is _________________.  Do not include "The main idea of this essay is" in the essay.  Whatever is in the blank should be able to stand alone.

Body:

• Does your essay have specific details from the film that support the theme of your essay?

Last paragraph:

• Does your essay have a conclusion that gives the reader the overall or general statement of the essay?

2) Check sheet for revised essay. Make sure to include your 1st draft with my comments along with the final draft.

_____ Type using Times New Roman 12 point font, double-space, double-sided, 1” margins.
_____ 2 pages with typed accents, tildes, and punctuation.
_____ Incorporate a relevant and concise title.
_____ Use the present tense.
_____ Use MLA style to cite the film in the "Bibliografía" section.
_____ Bold main idea.
_____ Underline 5 new vocabulary items seen up to now.

3) If you need help, see a tutor in the Writing Center (Buck 102) for help on content with your first draft, he/she will only guide you, don't expect him/her to write the essay for you.
