Ensayo #4
1) Preparation.
Ties that Bind
This video goes to both sides of the Texas-Mexico border to look at the human drama behind the debate about U.S. immigration policy. The film has three sections:
  1. The first part shows how post-NAFTA regulations have benefited multinational companies while constricting movement of people across the U.S.-Mexico border.
  2. The second segment documents the one billion dollars spent to maintain southern boundaries by the Clinton administration and follows a mother and daughter on their arduous passage to become legal immigrants to the U.S.
  3. The third part shows the founding work of immigrants who helped build the country in the past: building roads, harvesting crops, working in mines and building railroads. It also shows how community organizations created by immigrants help newcomers find their footing in their new home.
2) After seeing Ties that Bind think about points that you can describe and then react and recommend, all in the past tense.  This means using preterite and imperfect.
First paragraph
• Does your first paragraph have an introduction? Can the reader understand what you're writing about without seeing the film? (use the film's title.)
• Does the last sentence of your first paragraph state the main focus of your essay? You'll have to backup that focus with details in the body of the essay.  The last sentence should complete this sentence. [In this essay, I will talk about]...  The elements in brackets ARE NOT included in your main idea.
Second paragraph
• Does your essay have specific details from the film that support the theme of your essay?
Last paragraph
• Does your essay have a conclusion that gives the reader the overall or general reaction you have toward the film?
