Aubeterre-sur-Dronne, Church of St-Jacques

Aubeterre facade tout Aubeterre facade ground

In Medieval times, the church of St-Jacques in Aubeterre-sur-Dronne belonged to the Benedictine abbey of St-Sauveur. The modern name derives from Aubeterre's strategic location south of Angoulême along the pilgrim road to Compostella. The facade, built in the style of Constantine's Arch in Rome and decorated with geometric motifs of Islamic inspiration, is characteristic of Romanesque architecture in Aquitaine.
