Arles St-Trophime - Main Portal

Arles St Trophime Portail

The church of St.Trophime is named in honor of the first bishop of Arles, the facts of whose life are inexorably mixed with legend. Built on the foundations of an 8th century church, the current structure dates essentially from the 12th century. The main portal, half hidden here under scaffolding, has the appearance of a triumphal arc which has been added to an otherwise unadorned facade. It is considered one of the major triumphs of Provençal Romanesque art.
