Anderson Finalist for National Award

Illinois Wesleyan senior Rachel Anderson (in green uniform at right) is one of 11 candidates for the the 2007-2008 Division III Athlete of the Year, sponsored by the Collegiate Women Sports Awards and American Honda Motor Co., Inc.
As the Division III candidate representing track and field, Anderson is on the ballot with women from 10 other sports. The award presentation will be made June 23 at Columbia University in New York City.
To celebrate the nomination, American Honda Motor Co., Inc. is donating $1,000 to the Illinois Wesleyan women's athletic fund and American Honda Motor Co., Inc. will donate $5,000 to the school of the Division III Athlete of the Year recipient.
Anderson, a Clinton (Ill.) High School graduate, was named 2008 NCAA Division III Female Track Athlete of the Year as she helped her IWU women's team win both the national indoor and outdoor championships as well as the school's first College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin track title.
A 15-time NCAA Division III All-American in her career, she was the national indoor and outdoor champion in the 400 this year, the 200 outdoor champion, and ran on the indoor 4x400 relay team that placed first nationally.
She was a first team Academic All-America in 2007 and is the winner of an NCAA postgraduate scholarship.
In its 32nd year, the awards program recognizes the top woman collegiate athlete in each of 11 sports in Divisions II and III and also honors the recipients of the Honda-Broderick Cup and the Honda Inspiration Award.
Athletes are nominated by national coaches associations for each of 11 sports: basketball, cross country, field hockey, golf, lacrosse, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, track and field and volleyball. The athletes are placed on ballots emailed to all Divisions II and III senior women administrators in June.
In addition to Anderson, the other 2007-08 nominees are Meia Daniels (basketball, Howard Payne); Karen Doane (lacrosse, College of New Jersey); Cary Gibson (tennis, Williams); Taryne Lee, soccer, Wheaton [Ill.]); Susan Martin (golf, Methodist); Lindsey McNamara (field hockey, Bowdoin); Brittany Sasser (swimming, Amherst); Megan Soultz (softball, DePauw); Amber Thomas (volleyball, Juniata); Sarah Zerzan (cross country, Willamette).
