Award-Winning Poet Jonah Mixon-Webster to Visit Campus

Through the invitation of a student, poet and conceptual sound artist Jonah Mixon-Webster will visit Illinois Wesleyan University on Wednesday, Feb. 8. He is the author of “Stereo(TYPE),” a collection of poems that explore his identity as a Black man, a queer individual and a resident of Flint, Michigan.

7 p.m., Beckman Auditorium, The Ames Library — Poetry Reading: Jonah Mixon-WebsterJonah Mixon-Webster is a poet, educator, scholar, and art activist from Flint, Michigan. He is the founder of the Flint-based non-profit Center for Imaginative Freedoms and Economic Relief (CIFER) and serves as chapter leader of PEN America-Detroit. His debut poetry collection, Stereo(TYPE), received the PEN America/Joyce Osterweil Award and was a finalist for the Lambda Literary Award for Gay Poetry. He is the inaugural Mellon Arts Postdoctoral Fellow in African American and African Diaspora Studies at Columbia University. Sponsored by the English Department, the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, and Sigma Tau Delta English Honors Society.

6 p.m., Hansen Student Center — Lunar New Year Event — Cypher Dance Team is hosting the Lunar New Year celebration for the first time since pre-COVID. Students can perform or participate in the event by emailing lrobins1@iwu.edu. This is an event organized to celebrate the holiday of Lunar New Year! It will feature performances and speakers to talk about and showcase how different countries and cultures celebrate the event.

  • Yoga takes place on Mondays and Thursdays in the Niepagen South Classroom at the Shirk Center from 12:15 - 12:55 p.m.
  • Personal Fitness takes place on Tuesdays and Fridays on the east end of the Shirk Center track from 12:15 - 12:45 p.m.
