Scott Susong, Assistant Professor of Theatre Arts/Music Theatre Degree Liaison at Illinois Wesleyan University, holds an M.F.A. in Theatre from Towson University (thesis, “Investigating the Director’s Role in the Production of a New Musical”) and a B.A. in Theatre from the University of Texas at El Paso.
Aside from serving as Degree Liaison and running the BFA in Music Theatre, Scott’s teaching load at IWU includes: Acting I & Acting III, Auditions, Directing I, Introduction to Dramatic Literature, Music Theatre History & Literature, Gateway: The Evolution of the Female Playwright, Music Theatre Scene Study and Music Theatre Workshop. Since joining the IWU faculty in the fall of 2007, he has directed the Pulitzer-prize-winning musical Of Thee I Sing in McPherson Theatre, Working in the E. Melba Johnson Kirkpatrick Laboratory Theatre and Edges: A Song Cycle in the Phoenix Theatre. He directed the world premiere workshop of the new musical Winter of the Fall with composer/lyricists/librettist Lawrence Rush in residence, a showcase production of The Musical of Musicals, and vocal directed the musical Scrooge! Outside of academia Scott primarily freelances as a professional director. Select directing credits include: Triumph of Love (the musical), The Good Woman of Setzuan, Elegies: A Song Cycle, The House of Bernarda Alba, Jane Eyre (the musical), Annie, The Miracle Worker, Once on this Island, The Pajama Game, Two Gentlemen of Verona (the musical), COLE, Fiddler on the Roof, The World Goes ‘Round, Antigone, Cabaret, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, Annie Get Your Gun, WomanSpeak, The Marriage of Figaro (the play), Can-Can, The Sound of Music, Allegro and Spalding Gray's Rivkala's Ring, as well as, three original interdisciplinary pieces: The Poe Project, Simple Gifts (Greece tour), and Donne in Amore: Heroines in Verse (Italy tour). As an actor some of Scott’s credits include the 1996-97 national and international tours of The Sound of Music (Rolf), starring Marie Osmond and featured as part of the 100 Days of Wonder as Hong Kong returned to Chinese sovereignty; Ziggy in Tycoon, at the John Houseman & Douglas Fairbanks Theaters; Ali/PJ in Vampire Lesbians of Sodom at The Duplex; The Lisbon Traviata (Mike), Cabaret (Cliff), The Baltimore Waltz (Carl), A Midsummer Night's Dream (Demetrius & Oberon), and Camelot (Arthur & Lancelot), as well as, 14 productions with UDT, including: Into the Woods (Baker), Metropolis (Steven), Blood Brothers (Edward), City of Angels (Stine), Joseph . . . Dreamcoat (Joseph – 10th Anniversary Production), Guys & Dolls (Nathan Detroit), and Oklahoma! (Curly); Concert credits include: An Evening with Tim Rice with Sir Tim Rice and the 2003 concert of Jesus Christ Superstar starring original cast member Yvonne Elliman, again featuring Sir Tim Rice. Scott Co-founded and serves as Artistic Director of Curtain Call Productions, 1998-present. His CCP credits include Co-producing with Towson University, directing and designing the world premiere production of the new musical Lindbergh Baby Kidnapped at Baltimore's Theatre Project, featured in TCG’s American Theatre’s January 2002 musicals issue; directing the world premiere reading of the new musical Deceptions: Wind of Change at the Audrey Herman Spotlighters; producing/directing CCP educational wing, Summer on Stage’s production of the musical revue As Thousands Cheer and an outdoor production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. His teaching experience outside IWU includes teaching Musical Theatre performance in the undergraduate program at Towson University and serving as Associate Academy Director for the Summer Academy for the Arts at the College of Notre Dame of Maryland. From 2001-2007 Scott served as the Director of Theatre and Grade Level Dean at Roland Park Country School in Baltimore, MD. He spent two summers working with students and Globe Education practitioners at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in London. Scott’s awards and association include being a proud member of SSDC, the Society of Stage Directors and Chorographers and mtEA, the Musical Theatre Educators Alliance – International. He was a member of the staff for the January 2000 ITI/TCG International Conference for Theatre Makers & Trainers: International Origins for New Theatre Practice: keynote, Anne Bogart and a participant in the September 2000 West Coast Musical Theatre Conference: keynote, Julie Taymor, and participated in the 2005 Educational Theatre Association Conference in Atlanta, GA: keynote Eric Booth. He is the 2001 recipient of a Towson Graduate Student Association Award of Excellence, the 2005 recipient of the Passano Family Interdisciplinary Chair for Communications and the Sans Tache Faculty Prize at RPCS and is included in the 9th edition of Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers, and has been invited to present at the 2009 international mtEA conference in Denmark and Germany (“Music Theatre Curriculum: hybrids of the BFA conservatory model”). Scott is married to actress Cristen Susong and has two children, Elijah and Eden. |
