Study Abroad Photo Contest Winners

Congratulations to Katy Buoscio, Emily Szymski and Anne Marquette, winners of the Fall 2009 Photo Contest!

First-Place winner

A Young Boy Finds Joy
Studied Abroad:  Madrid, Spain, Spring 2009
Photo Location: Plaza Mayor, Madrid

The Spanish are quit the social bunch. They enjoy good food and company, and this popular plaza became my perfect spot to watch and catch a few rays. Despite the lack of an actual 'futbol' field or team players, the Spanish passion for the sport is visible just about everywhere you turn. Here, I was lucky enough to snap a photo of this little guy making his country proud and truly having a ball (pun intended).

Second-Place winner

Young Girls Eating Mango at the Damba Festival
Studied Abroad: Ghana Spring 2009
Photo Location: Tamale, Damba Festival

This photo was taken at the Muslim Damba Festival in Tamale, in the Northern region of Ghana. The festival was so chaotic and people were celebrating everywhere. I wanted to take so many pictures, but the second I would whip out my camera to take something in particular, 10 little kids would jump in front of my camera asking me to take thier picture. I saw these two little girls and asked if I could take their picture, and unlike the rest of the kids, these two, as you can see from their faces, were less than excited, and confused as to why I would want to take their picture.

Honorable Mention

Living Statue
Studied Abroad: England, Pembroke Program 2008-2009
Photo Location: Bath, England

One thing I particularly miss about traveling abroad is watching the many quality street performers. You can find some real performance artists in foreign cities, and this man I found while visiting Bath is simply the best I have ever seen. Not only did he manage to fool both tourists and pigeons, but people still don't think he's real when I show them the photo!
