Safe Zone

IWU Safe Zone LogoThe IWU Safe Zone Program creates an opportunity for Illinois Wesleyan community members to reduce homophobia and heterosexism on campus. IWU Safe Zone empowers students, faculty, and staff members to serve as resources for members of the campus community who are interested in becoming more knowledgeable about sexual orientation and gender identity. IWU Safe Zone also provides LGBT students and employees with easily identifiable and supportive spaces to feel comfortable and safe in a confidential environment.

Safe Zone Workshops

Safe Zone certification requires attendance at two, 2-hour introductory workshops.  The Level 1 workshop explores lesbian, gay and bisexual identity, culture and history.  The Level 2 workshop relates level 1 learning to gender, gender identity and the experiences of transgender people.  Workshops are scheduled for 2 hours, and participants must complete the entire session for it to count towards certification.  Additional Safe Zone Xtra workshops continue to expand the knowledge of Safe Zone members by providing additional topics that intersect with LGBT identities.  It is expected that Safe Zone members will attend at least one Safe Zone Workshop in each academic year to maintain certification.
