Two Titans Earn Academic All-District Honors

May 8, 2008

Senior second baseman Ricky Angel and junior outfielder Monica Urban have been elected to the first team of the college division all-District V academic baseball and softball squads, respectively, and will join representatives of seven other districts on the ESPN: The Magazine Academic All-America national ballots.

Angel (Glen Ellyn, Glenbard West HS) is a business management major with a 3.34 grade-point average. This season (through games of May 8) he is hitting .347 with 12 doubles, 11 home runs, and 61 runs batted in.

Urban (Wheaton, North HS) has a 3.9 grade-point average as an accounting major. Through the first regional game on May 8, Urban is hitting .474 with 27 runs scored, four doubles and a triple. She has stolen 19 of 20 bases.

The all-district teams are chosen by a vote of members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) in Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and the Canadian provinces of Manitoba and Ontario. To be considered for the ESPN: The Magazine Academic All-America squads, players must be of at least sophomore standing, have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.2 (of 4.0), and be a starter or first-line reserve.

Illinois Wesleyan student-athletes have earned a total of 108 Academic All-America berths, a total eclipsed by only eight other schools, including Nebraska, Notre Dame, Penn State, UCLA and Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
