Office of the Registrar

Dear incoming IWU student:

Soon you will begin your studies at IWU.  Please read this information carefully as it will assist you in the process of preparing for academic advising and registering for your first semester of classes at IWU.

Part I: Overview of Advising and the Registration Process

• Complete the online IWU Pre-registration Questionnaire confirming major declaration, ranking Gateway Colloquia preferences, and indicating second language interest by July 15, 2011.

• Over the summer, the General Education Coordinator will review your transcripts from your transfer institution(s) and determine what general education requirements you have fulfilled.  In order to ensure this process occurs before you arrive on campus, be sure to send your final transcripts to IWU as soon as possible.

• During Turning Titan: New Student Orientation, you will:

  • Learn about the general education requirements and the registration process in a group advising session;
  • Attend a departmental information session with the Department Chair for your major;
  • Meet individually with an advisor in your major department or the Director of Academic Advising to select your courses for the fall semester.

• To prepare for your group advising and individual advising appointment, you may want to peruse the IWU Catalog to review general education and major requirements, as well as look over the course descriptions to see what might be of interest to you for your first semester.

Part II: Overview of the IWU Pre-registration Questionnaire

You will find the link to the IWU Pre-registration Questionnaire after the instructions below, please read through carefully.

1. Basic Information:

You can find your email address and ID number on the postcard that was sent by Information Technology Services.

2. Intended Major:

When you applied for admission at IWU, you indicated your intended major.  On this section of the IWU Pre-registration Questionnaire use the drop-down boxes to indicate what your major is, as well as any educational goal you may have.

  • Please note that majors in Music, Music Theatre, Theatre Arts, Art, and Nursing all require special admission procedures (e.g., auditions, portfolios).  You can not change to one of these majors without consulting with the Program Director for that program.
  • Additionally, due to space limitations, if you were not admitted as a Biology major, you may not shift to Biology at this time.

3. Gateway Colloquium Preference:

All students are required to take a Gateway Colloquium, a course designed to develop writing and critical thinking skills typically during their freshman year.  Since we may not be able to review your transcripts before our deadline of July 15th to determine if you have met this requirement with your transfer work, we are asking you to select your preferences of Gateway Colloquium courses you would like to take if are still in need of this requirement.   Ranking your preferences does only that, we will only register you for this course if you need this requirement.

Each Gateway Colloquium has a different topic; please review the course descriptions for Gateway Colloquium 2011-2012 and indicate your choices in order of preference on the questionnaire.  If applicable, every effort will be made to enroll you in one of your seven choices.

4. Second Language Study Preference:

IWU has a three-semester foreign language requirement for a BA or BS degree and a two-semester requirement for a BFA or BM degree. Although not required, students seeking a BME or a BSN are encouraged to include language study in their degree plans as well.

If you started a foreign language at your previous institution, and plan to continue with that language at IWU, you cannot take the placement exam.  You will either be exempt from the requirement, or placed into the language based on the courses you took at your previous institution.

Your responses on the IWU Pre-registration Questionnaire will help us determine whether or not you will need to take IWU’s placement exam during Turning Titan: New Student Orientation.

Please be sure to fill out the information requested as fully and accurately as possible.  Click IWU Pre-Registration Questionnaire to complete your questionnaire.

If you have any questions about the IWU Pre-registration Questionnaire, please contact the Registrar’s Office at (309) 556-3161 or  iwureg@iwu.edu.  If you have any questions about academic advising, please contact the Academic Advising Center at 309-556-3231 or advising@iwu.edu.

Please complete the IWU Pre-Registration Questionnaire by July 15, 2011.  We will begin registration processing on July 18, 2011.  Any questionnaires received after that date will be processed on a first come, first serve basis.
