Report of the Strategic Planning and Budgeting Committee (SPBC)

November 3, 2008

Michael Thompson convened the Strategic Planning and Budgeting Committee meeting at 12:10 p.m. The notes from the SPBC meeting of 10.06.08 were accepted as presented.

I. Admissions and Enrollment Management

Tony Bankston and Bob Murray attended the meeting to present information concerning admissions and enrollment management. Tony presented the Fall 2008 Final Admission Report and provided details regarding the various fluctuations in enrollment categories over the past five years. Bob Murray presented an enrollment management report that highlighted IWU’s competitive position in relation to admissions overlap and aspirant peer institutions. He presented a number of charts explaining the affordability of college in the current economy, trends in financial aid, and the current trends in college discount rates, applications and yield. It was noted that IWU’s market position is as efficient as it can be for our available resources.

Extensive discussion followed Bob’s report.

II. Tuition Policy (Continued)

Dan Klotzbach distributed tuition and fee planning notes for discussion. The Board had approved an “up to” percentage increase at their meeting in late October. The President stated that we would probably need to convene another meeting to continue this discussion within the next month. He suggested that Bob Murray and Tony Bankston be invited back at that time.

III. Economic Outlook of the University

President Wilson discussed two areas of importance to the University in the present economic climate: enrollment and endowment. Both have significant implications for future budgets. He explained the need to consider these two areas within the next few months and have contingency plans in place.

The meeting was adjourned at 1:35 p.m.
