Report of the Strategic Planning and Budgeting Committee (SPBC)

December 19, 2005

President Wilson convened the twelfth SPBC meeting of 2005-06 at 2:30 pm.

Members reviewed a draft Executive Summary of planning goals and strategies as well as a longer document that included the rationale for each strategy. Further refinements and clarifications resulted from the discussion, and the group asked Professor Gardner to incorporate these changes into another draft of the documents that the SPBC will consider in early January.

In view of his desire to present completed planning documents to the Board of Trustees on February 6 and 7, the President asked the group to consider how and when to solicit reaction from the campus before then.  Members agreed to have materials ready for the faculty to discuss at its regularly scheduled meeting the week of January 16, 2006.  Separate meetings for staff and student groups will be arranged during that week as well.  In addition, the SPBC will hold an open forum for all campus constituencies (faculty, staff, or students) to accommodate those who wish to attend more than one discussion or whose schedules do not permit them to attend another meeting. Electronic copies of the planning documents will be made available to everyone late in the week of January 9, 2006.  President Wilson will send a brief note to the campus before the end of the Fall term, outlining the SPBC’s intentions.

The Committee adjourned at 4 p.m., looking forward to the holiday break and to completion of the plan in just a few short weeks.
